Ruhayat Posted September 6, 2008 Share #21 Posted September 6, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) If you put the 80GB drive into an external Firewire casing you should be able to simply boot off it whenever you need to use OS X. Hold down the CMD and C keys simultaneously when you hear the boot-up chime and the Mac will let you select the startup drive. A feature you might lose when running Windows only: not sure if you would still be able to use an external monitor with the Macbook's lid closed. I use my Powerbook with an external monitor, keyboard and mouse when I'm at home and it helps conserve the life of the built-in LCD monitor, as well as have all the available video memory dedicated to the 22-inch monitor. ho_co Posted September 7, 2008 Share #22 Posted September 7, 2008 ... I think what I'm going to do is buy a larger 2.5" harddrive -- my MacBook came with only 80GB, which is a bit tight for my purposes -- and, at least initially, convert it to a pure Windows box ... Now, if Steve Jobs heard that! Lost another one before he even got started...

I hadn't thought of that ... good idea, though, so I'll investigate it further. Thanks! Hmm. One of the reasons I bought the MacBook (besides the price: $500, so how I could lose?) was so that I could use the original 22" ACD I have stashed away in a closet. Even though I have a Dr. Bott adapter so that it will work with a Windows box, my present notebook lacks a DVI output and the cost of a PCMIA card to provide this functionality is semi-ridiculous... audidudi Posted September 7, 2008 Author Share #24 Posted September 7, 2008 Now, if Steve Jobs heard that! I'm coming to understand why some immigrants to this country never learn to speak English: Sometimes, it's just too much work to change old habits and not worth the effort! Just as well, cos the Macbook has no PC Card slot anyway. You can get a mini-DVI adapter at the Apple store; around US$80, I think. My external monitor looks a whole lot better than my internal LCD, so might well be worth the price of that adapter.

Unfortunately, you have to plug the mini-DVI adapter into an ACD adapter in order to use the original ACD monitors. Fortunately, the Apple store isn't the only source for these, so the total cost to buy a third-party version of each is ~$50.
