C1 and Lightroom printing thumbnails

I have been a Lightroom user since it was in beta . There is an ease in its use . I actually prefer it to Aperture (which I also own) for a variety or reasons . One of the main reason is the way that Lightroom prints thumbnails (contacts as we used to call them). This in mind when I have tried using C1 , which I do not find very intuitive - but perhaps I need more practice, I found I could not print thumbnails . Is this feature also lacking in the pro version?

One feature of C1 that I do like, and correct me if I'm wrong , is it seems to place that data in the actual folder of images being edited . Would this then allow you to transfer that folder to another computer without data loss. Allowing the editing process to be contiued on another machine.

I think you can see what I am getting at. I use several computers , one at home, one in my office, and then of course my MacBook on the road. With lightroom all the data is stored in the Library, thus making it very difficult to work on several machines. With C 1

I might be able to achieve this objective, but not if I cannot print proper thumbnails. I

Any insight would be welcome

Peter, I am a Ci Ver4 user. I don't have the other programs to which you refer so I canot compare. C1 is not particularly intuitive as you say, but, according other comparators, a superior RAW processor, which is it's intended function. The other programs, I think, attempt other funtions as well.

Moving the 'data' folder with the images files I suspect would work, but conditional on theC1 software being installed on the alternative machine, of course. I have not tried it since it is not an issue for me. C1 has a facility to produce a web based contactsheet which may be possible to print out. I don't know. PS does a good alternative if you want print out copies. The C1 web based contactsheet works well IMHO, but I don't like the crazy internal numbering system it uses.

We are still waiting for the Pro ver of 4. Supposed to be later this year. Not clear on what extra it will offer.

Erl,

Thanks. Yes I notice the web based contacts - if saved could be printed . It just seems a round about way requiring extra steps. I process quite a number of images at any given time and would like to print direct to contacts . Which is the main reason I have stayed with Lightroom.

Thanks again

Peter,

There are several ways to do what you want to do with LR.

First, you can let LR write out its modifications as metadata into the image files (DNG) or as side car XMP files (RAW). This allows you to open the files in Photoshop (Camera Raw) or to import them into other LR catalogs. To do this either use the Save Metadata to File command on individual images or enable Automatically write changes into XMP in the metadata tab of your Catalog Settings.

There is also the option of exporting selected images as a catalog to a portable volume with the Export as Catalog command.

Lastly, you could just move your main catalog to an external drive that you can carry with you.

Hope this helps
