M7 Viewer Magnification Choices

Hi

I have a number of film bodies, including one M6 with 0.85x and a number of bodies with 0.72x magnification. I have had to send my M7 back to Solms due to a fault with the on/off switch. Now I'm thinking I might use the opportunity to upgrade the viewfinder to MP class. My question is what experience folks have had with the 0.58x magnification.

I wear glasses, which is a potential plus for the lower magniifcation. I also use wider lens most of the time. Probably 70 percent of my photos are with either a 28mm or 35mm lens. I struggle with framing with both these lens when using 0.72x. I have also held off buying the 24mm because of the framing issues I have. However, I also like to shoot wide open so precise focus is important, which is perhaps my greatest reservation with the 0.58x. Any comments?

Also, what are the frame lines which are visible with the 0.58x?

Thanks

Murray

Hi,

I had a .58x MP and it was great with the 24/5, 28, 35 focal lengths. The VF showed the 28-35-50-75-90 lines; but I could use the entire vf to frame for the 24/5 focal length. It was a fantastic VF for the 35 and wider lenses, but not for the faster 50s and longer lenses. I would highly recommend it for your stated shooting habits. If you have a .72x or higher VF in a 2nd body, I use it to shoot your longer lenses and faster 50/1,4- type lenses.

Murray everything I have read about glasses wearers and the 0.58x mag indicates that the body of opinion agrees with what Thomas and Pangur wrote above. What some people also do is remove framelines that they know they don't want, like the 75 or 90 for example. Users of this body and the CV R4 (which has a 0.52x mag) do report difficulty focusing a fast(ish) 50mm lens so the 0.58x does appear to be limited to wides. If you are considering getting the VF magnification changed on a body you currently own I would look into the cost of it vs buying new or trading a current body to a dealer for a 0.58x. The only way to get a new 0.58x M7 or MP these days is a la carte.

I trust you are enjoying your MP3?

I wear glasses too, owned a 0.58 for awhile, but never liked it and got rid of it. The picture in the viewfinder was too small for my taste. It made focusing a hassle. I would only get a 0.58 if not only use a wide angle most of the time, but get close and personal with your subjects. That way everything is big and bold in the viewfinder.

Ultimately, there's no way to know if a 0.58 is for you, other then to get one and try it out. You'll know pretty quick if you like it. It's been my experience that people's first impressions in this regard tend to be their final ones too.

Hi Peter

Never got the MP3 in the end. When it came time I was in one of my simplifying moods and decided I didn't need another Leica film body. The seller was ok as he had another buyer. Must say that whilst the MP3 is a most stunning camera I don't regret not buying it - yet!
