bobygunn Posted August 25, 2008 Share #1 Posted August 25, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi everyone, I want to give off camera flash a try on my M7, I already have an Nikon SB-600 I've never used which Ill use if possible. Does anyone have any experience with this particular flash? I have found some other recommendations to use a Vivitar 283 or a similar Metz unit but if the SB-600 works well I'll stay with that. Im guessing I'll need some sort of hotshoe adaptor and Im happy to use a cable, pocket wizards seem a bit extreme for my intentions. Ill be mainly using the setup for photographing skaters on the streets which could be interesting since the flash sync speed is 1/50. ive never used flash before so if anyone has any advice that would be great, I'll be using a 35mm Summicron too if that helps. bill Posted August 25, 2008 Share #2 Posted August 25, 2008 Welcome Bobygunn. Your M7 will TTL dedicate with the appropriate Leica flash - SF20 or SF24, or with a Metz gun with the appropriate SCA adaptor. AFAIK it does not dedicate to Nikon - the circuitry is different, although the pin placement is the same. It is that similarity of pin placement, however, that answers your primary question - get yourself a Nikon SC-17 cord or the like, and you are away. You can of course use any gun in auto or manual modes, BUT be careful with the 283 - older models may damage the circuitry on your M7 by having a higher trigger voltage. Photon42 Posted August 27, 2008 Share #3 Posted August 27, 2008 Hi bobygunn, what Bill says. The SB600 is either Nikon DTTL/iTTL or manual mode. Nikon TTL does not work with your Leica for obvious reasons, the latter means either guestimate / calculate (GN / distance = aperture) the output power or use a separate flash meter. There are better Nikon options. I personally find the SB27 cheap, equipped with four or five automatic apertures and still acceptable from the footprint aspect. It has a funny bouncing blind which actually works not so bad. Automatic flash apertures built into the flash do not require any pre-flash. I rate this higher than the theoretically better metering with TTL. Regards Ivo
