jlancasterd Posted August 21, 2008 Share #25 Posted August 21, 2008 Is Vuescan much better than the Polaroid's own program? When I switched from using a PC to a MAC, around 3 years ago, I found it impossible to download MAC-compatible software from the Polaroid website. I therefore switched to VueScan (Professional edition) on the recommendation of members of this website. It was some of the best advice I've ever received. I can't exactly remember how the Polaroid software worked on a PC, but I don't remember it being especially user-friendly. VueScan does everything that I need with 35mm and 120 transparencies or negatives on the SprintScan - including the special scanning needed by old Kodachromes. It also runs my CanoScan 9900F when I need to scan prints or text (I edit a magazine and have to do quite a lot of varied scanning). I've even used VueScan to scan old 116 size negatives on the CanoScan with useable results - IIRC I had to tape the negatives to the glass flatbed within the 4x5 film holder supplied with the CanoScan. rob_x2004 Posted August 21, 2008 Share #26 Posted August 21, 2008 Minolts Scan Elite 5400ii. Trialed silverfast used vuescan. Default Minolta software was better by far, so I partitioned my drive installed XP on the machine to keep using it.
pleeson Posted August 22, 2008 Share #27 Posted August 22, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) VueScan has a significant learning curve, but once you get the hang of it, it works well. It's very customizable, this adds to the complexity. And will cover virtually every scanner out there, I've used it for the V, the 9000 and for flatbeds as well . And has free and frequent updates (for the pro version)
arpey Posted August 22, 2008 Share #28 Posted August 22, 2008 Purchased a Nikon Coolscan 5000 ED new in January of this year -- I've had good results using the Nikon software that was delivered with the scanner. I scan color negatives, color positives and B&W negatives. Based on comments read in this and other forums, I downloaded a trial version of Vuescan to see what all the fuss is about -- however, I haven't found any compelling reason to use Vuescan in lieu of Nikon's standard software. Maybe I'm missing something, but I've yet to see any meaningful difference -- perhaps someone can explain what I'm not seeing.

cocker Posted August 22, 2008 Share #31 Posted August 22, 2008 16x sampling is available in Nikon scan software too (version 4). But it doesn't work (Nikonscan that is) on a Mac running Leopard

arpey Posted August 22, 2008 Share #33 Posted August 22, 2008 Perhaps the situation with the Mac is as you say ... however, I use a high-end PC running Windows XP ... I scan every week at 16x oversampling and it works fine ... big ass files, but it works just fine.
ndjambrose Posted August 22, 2008 Share #34 Posted August 22, 2008 But it doesn't work (Nikonscan that is) on a Mac running Leopard Where did you get that idea? I'm running mine on a Mac with Leopard. Works just fine.
andybarton Posted August 22, 2008 Share #35 Posted August 22, 2008 Here too Vuescan is still far superior, though
roguewave Posted August 23, 2008 Share #36 Posted August 23, 2008 I use an Epson V700 for scanning my negs. Vuescan is the best software I have used to date. I love my results.
arpey Posted August 23, 2008 Share #37 Posted August 23, 2008 Here too Vuescan is still far superior, though Andy - with respect "vastly superior" in what way? Take us beyond the assertion - I'd really like to know.
cocker Posted August 23, 2008 Share #38 Posted August 23, 2008 Where did you get that idea? I'm running mine on a Mac with Leopard. Works just fine. I got the "idea" from trying it. Nikonscan does NOT run on my new iMac. If you can suggest how I can get it to work I would be most grateful.
ndjambrose Posted August 23, 2008 Share #39 Posted August 23, 2008 Sorry to hear that, Keith. Mine worked out straight of the box. I looked in the packaging and Nikon had provided a disk with OSX stamped on the front - I installed it and it worked immediately. Mac version is Leopard 10.5.4 and Nikon scan version 4.0.0 EN, on a 2.8 Core 2 iMac with 4 Gb RAM. If yours doesn't work it's probably nothing to do with the Nikon software. I know of several people who use it on Leopard, so perhaps the problem is your Mac. Not that that helps you much...
MSV Posted August 27, 2008 Share #40 Posted August 27, 2008 KonicaMinolta DualScan IV and a Epson 4490 for 120 negs, I use both with their own software but I know Vuescan as well, and I think that's a great tool too. Have a nice day.
