Megamassi Posted August 1, 2008 Share #1 Posted August 1, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi, I contacted BH in NY and they said that D-Lux 3 was no longer available to them from Leica. I can get the D-Lux 3 here in Iceland but I am thinking, Is the D-Lux 4 coming in Photokina? It would be lame to buy it know and have a new one coming out in a months time. Can anyone comment on this? - Any news on a updated D-Lux in the pipes?

stunsworth Posted August 1, 2008 Share #2 Posted August 1, 2008 Welcome to the forum. Panasonic have recently announced the LX-3, so I think a D-lux 4 is pretty certain before too long.

freddofrog Posted August 4, 2008 Share #4 Posted August 4, 2008 " Is the D-Lux 4 coming in Photokina?" Yes. I love your “Yes” response Offshore, so simple. However it raises more questions than it answers. Your Yes implies you are 100% certain. Is this the case and you have some inside info you want to share? Or are you just making logical deductions like everyone else given the recent LX3 release, current D-Lux 3 discounts, its lack of supply in some countries and Photokina only a month away? Iron Flatline Posted August 4, 2008 Share #5 Posted August 4, 2008 I have the D-Lux 3 and don't like it. The new Panasonic is close to the older one, though a little wider and a little faster (24mm vs. 28mm, and f/2.0 vs. f/2.8) I don't see the speed being very useful, but the width might occasionally come in handy... streetshooter Posted August 5, 2008 Share #8 Posted August 5, 2008 I have a D-Lux 3 and it is a good camera. I use it in 16:9 mostly along with a G9. The D-Lux 4 with a 24 f2 is a no brainer for me. If it was the same as the 3 with the new lens, I'd be happy. It will be nice to see what else I'd does differently. Shooter
Megamassi Posted August 5, 2008 Author Share #9 Posted August 5, 2008 I looked at the LX3 and I kinda like the lens on the D-Lux 3 better. 24-60 vs 28-116 is better for me all around. I like the camera and love the 16:9 aspect. I also have a G9 and I like the Leica more for the compact size and ease of use. I like the quality but I would like to shoot raw without having to write raw+jpg to the memory card. To put the dot over the i - I got the leather base which I love : ) I will take a look at D4 when it arrives but it is usually best to wait for a few months for the manufacturer to even out flaws of a spanking new cameras. I´ve seen pics from LX3 and I am not that impressed and if you want to get good quality it is usually better to use higher F settings than 2.0 or 2.8. I also have a Canon EOS 1D Mark III for professional shoots so I don´t compare it to super pro cameras but compared to G9 it is very good. I highly reccomend it for a back up or a traveling companion. -Massi
samba Posted August 5, 2008 Share #10 Posted August 5, 2008 Great to see this thread and the input from those in the know. I'm new to this forum, as I'm looking to jump into the wonderful Leica world with a lightweight travel kit. I currently have a Canon 5D with 24-70L, but it is not something that you want to lug everywhere you go. I'm smitten with the D-Lux 3/leather bag combination. Should suit me well from a daily use and travel perspective. Alas, I guess I will now have to wait and see how the D-Lux 4 looks by comparison. From what I'm reading, with the LX3 as a guide, it sounds like it will be a better low light performer than the 3. I also like that it is wider for my shooting purposes. Time will tell. Anyway, happy to be here. Cheers! Samba
centresud Posted August 6, 2008 Share #11 Posted August 6, 2008 Hmm... let me see if I get this straight. Seems to me that the big deal with D-Lux 3 was the VARIO-ELMARIT lense. The equivalent panasonic product was the Lumis DMC-L1. This was upgraded to the Lumis DMC-L10 although the new VARIO-ELMAR lense seems more like a step down in quality. And now the new panasonic lumix LX3 Stunsworth comment leaves leaves me perplexed: Panasonic have recently announced the LX-3, so I think a D-lux 4 is pretty certain before too long. I really don't see how the new LX3 can be considered an extension of the D-Lux 3/Lumis DMC-L1 product. F2 and wide angle is interesting, but does the VARIO-SUMMICRON lense stack up to the VARIO-ELMARIT. With the probable inclusion of the Venus Engine IV, will the trade off be better electronics, cheaper lense. Thanks. leicagator Posted August 6, 2008 Share #12 Posted August 6, 2008 Centresud, welcome to the Forum. You are mixing up, however, the Dlux-3 with the Digilux 3. The Digilux 3 is the Leica equivalent to the Panasonic L 1. The Dlux-3 is the Leica equivalent to the Panasonic Lumix LX-2. The discussed Leica Dlux-4 would be the equivalent to the Panasonic Lumix LX-3. Best Regards, L.

rob_x2004 Posted August 6, 2008 Share #15 Posted August 6, 2008 ... new Panasonic is close to the older one ... Didnt it get a physically larger sensor, bigger pixels?
vondauster Posted August 6, 2008 Share #16 Posted August 6, 2008 Didnt it get a physically larger sensor, bigger pixels? Actually, Panasonic did something pretty radical these days: it did not increase the "megapixelage" of the new camera, but instead claims they worked to improve the low light response and the post capture processing. Kudos to Panasonic! I have the D-Lux 3 and have been delighted with it. Yes, raw without jpeg would be nice, but with the cost of high capacity SDHD cards dropping constantly, this is not that big an issue. I will also be getting the D-Lux 4 as soon as it is released for the faster, wider lens.
sparkie Posted August 6, 2008 Share #17 Posted August 6, 2008 aren't the Pana Lx3 and the anticipated D Lux4 essentially the same cameras? so you are paying a premium for the red-dot.. ? -- what were the key differences between the LX2 and DLux3.. if there were any
stunsworth Posted August 6, 2008 Share #18 Posted August 6, 2008 Improved warranty and better software. The Leica also looked a little better IMHO, but not enough for me to stump up the extra.
sparkie Posted August 6, 2008 Share #19 Posted August 6, 2008 yeah, agreed steve. most would cover the dot over with black tap anyways. just this time we get the option of buying a cheeper Pana version. pity we didnt have a pana M8 to save us £££ but the software difference.. was it of any real practical benefit/advantage? stunsworth Posted August 6, 2008 Share #20 Posted August 6, 2008 Not really. I can't remember what came with which camera, but since I already had the full version of Photoshop it was irrelevant.
