Micheal Posted October 5, 2006 Share #21 Posted October 5, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello Rob, Thanks for the complement, I really appreciate your word. I hope there is an excellent Leitz lens expert out there to help me out as I am always unsure of my spelling. In 1971 I started my first teaching job out of graduate school at "The Society of Arts & Crafts"in Detroit, Michigan. My wife also had a job at the school as secretary in the Art Dept. The school Is know named "The Center for Creative Design. We suddenly had a differrent level of income than that of the student. So the first semester I bought a Nikon F with an f. 2 35mm nikor lens & setting exposure witha Pentax "zone" set up spotmeter. The second semester I bought the Leitz M4 with a (I hope I am spelling it correctly) a 35mm f.1.4 Summilux lens as I was buying this very sexy black camera body & I wanted to buy an equally high end lens over the f. 2 Summicron (?sp) which was the normal lens at the time. Also, at that time Leicas were expensive but still affordable Thats about all I can say about it really. I didn't use it a lot as I bought a 20mm lens for the Nikon & have never put the Nikon Fs down till a Canon IV EOS with a 16mm-35mm f2.8 for a couple of years then a Leica R8 to couter act the Canon. Most of the Las Vegas photos on the site were shot with a Nikon F3/moter drive a 20mm or 28mm lens. A few with the Canon, the rest are with Nikons other than the one shot with the Leica M4. I am just starting to investigate & engage the R8. Sincerely, Michael Dickey

Micheal Posted October 7, 2006 Share #22 Posted October 7, 2006 Rob. Here is one thing I do remember about the lens. The lens shade was rather large as the lens diameter was large. (For a Leica). The shade cut into the view finder area in the lower right hand corner. The shade didn't completly black out the corner as it had a series of slots to see through. I really found it distracting. That is probably why I ended up going with the Nikon F with 35mm f 2.8. So what am I on the Leica site for? After purchasing an R8 with a 19 mm f.2.8 Elmarit I was originally curious and then learned some good information & found it wasn't comprised of a bunch of egomaniacs & I could actually participate on a few threads. My plans are to return to using my Leitz Focomat V35 enlarger & my darkroom & start printing b&w fiber base prints from negatives shot with the R8 & lenses (I just added a 28mm Elmarit) Having dealt with digital for 15 years & teaching it for the past 10 I am somewhat burned out on the whole thing. If I do any thing with my computer studio, it will probably be making Quadtone b&w prints as I really like the 35" x 22" print size that is far superior to what one could do with the conventional silver based print process. My print size in the darkroom is usually 8" x 5.3" with occasional 11" wide or 22" wide, md
