spydrxx Posted September 21, 2006 Share #1 Posted September 21, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) I recently acquired an R8 and am thoroughly enjoying its use. However, in shooting with my 400mm Telyt, I found focussing at f6.8 & f8 to be problematic with the standard focus screen. I was wondering if other forum members have had experience using the Uniform Ground Glass Screen (14344) or the Uniform Ground Glass Screen with Grid (14346) with small aperture telephoto lenses, and what your findings were. Eastland comments in his book that 14346 is brighter by about 2 f stops than the standard universal screen, but no such comment for 14344. Thanks in advance. Advertisement Posted September 21, 2006 Posted September 21, 2006 Hi spydrxx, Take a look here R8 Focus Screen with Telyt. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
garyp Posted September 21, 2006 Share #2 Posted September 21, 2006 I like and use the Uniform GG in my R8 bodies for all focal lengths. I like the uncluttered view. The GG with grid, I have no experience with.
Michiel Fokkema Posted September 21, 2006 Share #3 Posted September 21, 2006 Hi, I only use the uniform GG in my R8 and R3. That's because I mostly use them foe long(slow) lenses and macro shots. In both cases this GG is much better than the standard. Cheers, Michiel Fokkema
paulja Posted September 22, 2006 Share #4 Posted September 22, 2006 yes the groung glass screen is easier to focus i use it with my 250,350,and my 400 2.8,the split screen is not as easy especially for birds...paul
11275 Posted September 22, 2006 Share #5 Posted September 22, 2006 I would agree that the ground glass (either with or without grid) is much preferable to the Universal screen but I have also used the 14345 Microprism screen with good results. I tend to like the confirmation given by the microprisms and if necessary one can still use the surrounding ground glass field. The microprisms sometimes are too coarse but not nearly as annoying as the split image when it blacks out entirely. If you can try one before you purchase - see if you like it . . . if not, a safe choice is the GG.
telyt Posted September 22, 2006 Share #6 Posted September 22, 2006 I only use the uniform GG in my R8 and R3 R3? Did you have a repair technician install the GG screen?
