kenneth Posted July 8, 2008 Share #1 Posted July 8, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) I recently used a friends Coolscan to digitise a couple of my negs. As he does not use his Coolscan on a regular basis he has said I may borrow it but the plug link between it and a laptop is a multi-prong interface which I do not have on my Apple iBook G4. Does anyone know of an adaptor that I could buy so as I could convert interface multi plug to USB?

stunsworth Posted July 8, 2008 Share #2 Posted July 8, 2008 The older Nikon scanners used a SCSI interface. You can buy SCSI to USB converters, but I'm sure I read somewhere that they may not work with scanners.

Thanks Steve- my friend uses a SCSI interface with his Coolscan in his PC so this may well be the stumbling block. Maybe I need to go onto an Apple knowledge based forum to explore that further? andybarton Posted July 8, 2008 Share #4 Posted July 8, 2008 SCSI is a 1980s technology that was really pretty clunky to be truthful. It was rarely a standard on PCs, so your friend must have installed a card to accept the scanner (which must be pretty ancient now) If you have a Pro Mac, you could still buy a SCSI card for it (and then use Vuescan), but it would be a royal PITA. And cost you more than a new scanner yourself. If you have an iBook, you have only the USB-SCSI option, which will also be clunky. I'd say it was a lot of bother, to be honest, especially if this is to be a "casual affair"
kenneth Posted July 8, 2008 Author Share #5 Posted July 8, 2008 Andy Thank you, it is only a casual affair so, as you rightly put- I will not bother
andybarton Posted July 9, 2008 Share #6 Posted July 9, 2008 For those of you who will not have seen a response to Kenneth's query on a Mac related forum (which ALSO has a very decent moderator ), a link has been posted to what seems to be a very useful article.
