I have two of his cases, one for my IIIc and one for my M2. They are beautifully made, and fit like a glove. In the UK at least, Luigi threw in a leather neck-strap each time I bought from him, and a Leica key-ring. Unless he is on holiday, dispatch is very fast - same week in each instance for me, the second time in the second week in December! There beautiful no doubt but there are other options much less expensive. There's a Chinese dude who sells knockoffs, maybe not as well made but I bet they'll work just as well, and even if they last half as long there 1/4 the price, so....you do the math. And then there are the M6 ERC cases Leica made, which you can pick up used for under a c-note, which are very well made. Guest rontr6 Posted June 30, 2008 Share #4 Posted June 30, 2008 Another option is an M4 case which separates in two halves, the complete case is not very attractive so they don't go for much on Ebay, mine was a tenner plus postage, it's not as nice as Luigi's [i've got one as well and they're almost too good to use] but it does the job. You get what you pay for...the others are nice and well crafted...if you're satisfied with that work, then you can save some money. Occasionally you can find a used Luigi case on Ebay (I just sold one for the R8 body, which I had bought used a couple of years ago, but it looked so pretty I didn't use it). I do have one for my M4 which does the camera justice...and the strap is truly my favorite of all time (I have been making camera straps myself for about 10 years...mine just don't measure up to Luigi's). The "Chinese dude" you refer to is Mr. Zhou who does indeed make cheap replicas of Luigi's cases. That's fine if that's what you want. The Leica ERCs are poorly made in comparison, and certainly don't fit as well. A half-case is not a fashion accessory, in my book. It is partly for protection and partly for improved handling. A case doesn't do anything but cover the camera. And the Leica cases do that better because you can use the top half if you toss the camera in a breifcase. I know women get carried away about handbags, my daughter drools over Channel or Gucci or Mulberry or maybe Prada, but hey, we are men. I would like a half case just to protect the back of my camera from being bumped and rubbed during normal usage and from what I have read so far something might well be available second hand. I have a Leica full neoprene case which is terrific but the front is not detachable. Welcome, dear visitor! A few scraps of leather and felt and a handful of thread and snaps put together and wrapped around a camera...does nothing mechanically or optically to impact picture quality one iota. But rather than just say "It's my money and if I want to spend $300 on a camera case or $500 on an alligator belt just because I can," you start in right away trying to make ridiculous statements about how they're truely superior at doing what it is they do, and what's more, hurling insults and trying to silence anyone who doesn't play along with your pretense that one of these cases is truly 3x better than another. Whatever it is that makes you need to defend and justify whatever you buy as if your manhood and intelligence was being challenged, is really what's ridiculous. Believe me, I don't give a handful of snot how you people dress up your Leica's. But the fact you guys get all passionate and pissed off about it, that's just sad. The author did say it was a bit on the crude side but it was protection for the camera. It did have one advantage over Luigi or Kameralether......... it makes the camera theft proof The contraption is so homely nobody in its right mind would be tempted to take it, you probably could leave it on a park bench return a few hours later and retrieve the camera from the closest trash bin comfortably nested between left over fries and burgers One thing I do wonder is why is it someone will spend a bundle on a M and lenses and when it comes to a case they will go cheap... just don't make sense Peter Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...
