cnguyen Posted June 21, 2008 Share #1 Posted June 21, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) I don't see many Digilux 3 thread here so I would like to start one. I'm not sure if there's future of 4/3rds for Leica so let's hope something will come out this photokina. I picked up a very nice Zeiss pancake lens 45mm f2.8 recently so here's pic of it with the Digilux 3. If you don't know it already you can buy Nikon , m42, Leica R, Pentax , Contax adapters to put your favorite lenses on the Digilux 3. Manual focusing is fine with these lenses. The Digilux 3 is slowly getting popular just like it's previous Digilux 2. Have fun with your Digilux 3 and Pan L1 as well I might add ! Welcome, dear visitor! ASpes Posted June 21, 2008 Share #2 Posted June 21, 2008 I don't see many Digilux 3 thread here so I would like to start one. It looks pretty nice on the D/3, though I like better the pictures you get from it to look pretty nice ... :-) My understanding is that Zeiss can use N/C mounts because their copyright expired, but the 4/3 mount, though it's still under copyright, is in some sort of "public domain", so last year I emailed Zeiss to inquire whether they planned a 4/3 mount for their lenses. Their answer was "We do not promise anything" ... maybe they deem the market share too small, but the few primes for 4/3 are always heavily backordered. Anyway what puts me off with using adapters is not manual focus but that you also have to manual stop down the lens before shooting. And this makes for a very slow use, unless you always go full open of course. I'm sure the Zeiss one is optically much better than the new Oly pancake, but in use the latter is a breeze. Thanks for all the pictures. Just my 2 (euro)cent of course.
cnguyen Posted June 21, 2008 Author Share #3 Posted June 21, 2008 ASpes, The manual focusing is not bad at all. it's the price you pay when you mount non 4/3rds lenses. I love the Zeiss lens signature so it's not an issue for me. I'm buying a 50mm f1.4 planar if I can find one. 4/3rd is an open standard that Leica, Pan and Oly adopted so I don't understand why Zeiss can't do it. May be there's not enough market for it. I had Pan L1 before and sold it and wish I hadn't sold it. Now with the Digilux 3 it will be my travel camera along with my Oly 510 and lenses. The R lenses perform beautifully on my Digilux 3 as well. By the way the Pan L1 in camera processing is different from Leicas. I like the Leica one better. audidudi Posted June 22, 2008 Share #4 Posted June 22, 2008 I've been using one of these on my L1 since February 2007 and it continues to impress me with its performance. Welcome, dear visitor! hpu Posted June 23, 2008 Share #6 Posted June 23, 2008 I have a question. I have seen good reviews for the Oly pancake 25 mm f2.8. Anybody uses this one?
cnguyen Posted June 23, 2008 Author Share #7 Posted June 23, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) I've seen pics of the Oly 25mm but so far I'm not too impressed. I like pics for the Pan 25mm f1.4 better but it's not a pancake. The Oly 25mm is more on a par with the Oly 35mm macro lens which is ok when compared to the Oly 50mm macro. roguewave Posted June 24, 2008 Share #8 Posted June 24, 2008 Just saw your thread. I have a question you might be able to help with, as you are using non AF lenses on your D3. I'm using R glass, via adapter, on my D3 with good results. I have been playing with the settings to get more control in Manual mode. Here's my question: 1) What are the best overall settings people use in Manual modes? What are the various ways to set exposure compensation with the wheel, while maintaining manual control over both Aperture & Shutter. Stuart's question to me about this prompted my re-thinking how I do it and if others have a system, I'd like to learn it. Thanks, Ben

cnguyen Posted June 25, 2008 Author Share #10 Posted June 25, 2008 Hi Roguewave, I have R lenses that I use with the Digilux 3 from time to time. I set the shutter speed on A , matrix metering and adjust the aperture ring to get the depth of field I want. Or sometimes I set the camera on manual by adjusting the shutter speed and aperture, under or overexposing accordingly. So far I have pretty good results with the above settings. By the way the L1 will give you focus assist with manual lenses but not the Digilux 3 just found out. have fun !
