Advertisement Posted June 16, 2008 Posted June 16, 2008 Hi chris_livsey, Take a look here Technical read. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
dhsimmonds Posted June 16, 2008 Share #2 Posted June 16, 2008 Chris I agree, a very interesting insight into the deeper technicalities of digital sensor designs. I would have liked to see the DMR and M8 compared with the C & N top end cameras though! I was not so surprised at the high performance recorded by Panasonic's FZ50 superzoom digicam. I extensively used their earlier FZ20 and FZ30 forerunners before plunging into the R9/DMR and they are both very capable cameras when used at lower ISO's. I am still occasionally astonished when comparing some of my earlier images taken with these cameras. Thank you for bringing this item to our attention. Hi Dave No problem in sharing, there is so much out there, mostly dross, the odd gem needs promoting and I knew some in the forum would find it interesting despite, as you say not covering the DMR or M8 directly, maybe the next Leica SLR though It also neglects the other area of my interest medium format backs which is where the link came from as the "high" end dslr v MFDB debate is as tedious as Nikon v canon - nearly:p The points raised on that forum were raised directly with the author who was generous enough to reply personally. you may be interested in the thread which is here: Luminous Landscape Forum -> Can Stitching 1DsMk3 files = Med Format Quality? Post 103 is also succinct It appears to confirm that the MFDB group does all the iso changing in software which is what empirically posters here have found with the higher M8 iso being noisier than shooting underexposed at lower iso and boosting in software, RAW assumed. Thanks for the feedback ChrisL
marknorton Posted June 16, 2008 Share #4 Posted June 16, 2008 Certainly a very interesting paper and I would point out the section on the NEF lossy compression and the justification for it; the M8 uses a similar technique to compress the 12 bit data to 8 bit, with the emphasis on preserving thre shadows. Interesting too that 14 bits seems to confer little advantage over 12 bit because the extra resolution is buried in the noise floor.

Yes a shame the novel Leica implementation doesn't get a mention. perhaps I can quote the post 103 from Edmund regarding, amongst other poins raised the 14 bit issue: "With straight and clear answers like these I guess Dr. M won't have a career in politics".
