biglouis Posted September 17, 2006 Share #1 Â Posted September 17, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) This weekend a marvellous event is taking place in London: Open House, when many building and sites are open to the public. Although St Pancras Old Churchyard is open all year round, at this time guided tours are given to explain the headstones and mausoleums. Â Below is detail from the self-designed Mausoleum of Sir Joan Soane (1753-1837 the famous architect who amongst other buildings designed the neo-classical edifice of the Bank of England. Â Apart from being a delightful structure it is also reputed to be the inspiration for one of London's most famous sites: the humble red telephone box (designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott in the 1930s).
