fuchs Posted June 1, 2008 Share #1 Posted June 1, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have a IV version 35/2 cron attached almost permanently to my 0.58 M7. In fact, I don't remember ever having mounted any other lens on it. Yesterday, a mildly cold day, I put the 35 on my M8, and the 50/2 on the M7. Framelines stayed the same. Even working the preview lever doesn't change them. I remember that was possible back one year ago, as I compared the M8 and the M7 VF side by side. Is there any home medicine I could try, or a trip to the repairservice is already sheduled? thanks, ed albesi

fuchs Posted November 30, 2008 Author Share #3 Posted November 30, 2008 My repairman disassembled the camera and found the framelines masks were sticking one to another. The reason was that bad quality lubricants from the RF assembly had emulsionated and the more liquid component vaporized inside the top plate, causing the two steel frames to stick. Not that reasonable for a US$ 3000+ camera with a development cycle of more than 50 years IMHO. So I finally sold it asap. As nice as a camera can be in every other respect. cheers
marknorton Posted November 30, 2008 Share #4 Posted November 30, 2008 If you don't frequent the M8 forum, you might like to look at my thread "Anatomy of the M8 Framelines" which will show you how they work - the M8 and M7 are very similar.
fuchs Posted November 30, 2008 Author Share #5 Posted November 30, 2008 Mark, I have read and enjoyed several times the pics of your M8 guts. (I am adoctor, and any anatomic dissection attracts inevitably me ) My repairman says both framelines mask should have no lubricant between them to work correctly. As a matter of fact, after he cleaned them thoroughly, they returned to normal function. So do they work only by friction?
marknorton Posted November 30, 2008 Share #6 Posted November 30, 2008 One is fixed and the other can move diagonally underneath it. There's clearance between them and they should slide easily, as you say, no lubricant required. There are springs to prevent too much force being applied to them so I think it's a good idea to work the lever a few times every few months to keep everything in order. fuchs Posted November 30, 2008 Author Share #7 Posted November 30, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) Yes, in fact I have never changed lenses on that camera, and I think I never used the frame selector lever but for comparing to the M8 FOV. Being a .58X it gave me approx the same view I had with the M8, so two version IV 35/2, one on the M7 and the other on the M8 used to give me the same rendition, handling, instinctive feeling and "image character" with two different crops. I too agree with the idea of working the selector lever every so often to maintain proper function. Thanks Mark
