fanuja Posted June 1, 2008 Share #1 Posted June 1, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello, I am new to the forum and I just bought my first Leica today at a garage sale. The Leica IIIa comes with a 3.5 Elmar lens and the serial number is : 262011. I have wanted a Leica for years and am excited that finally I get to use one. The cost of the camera was $50.00 and it is cleaning up very well. I believe that I have problem or I just don't understand the instructions for pulling the lens out. Turn slightly to the right and pull? I have tried that and the lens appears to be rock solid. Can someone please advise me? Regards, Fanuja

Guest Austerby Posted June 1, 2008 Share #2 Posted June 1, 2008 It's a screwmount lens, not a bayonet, so just keep on turning until the lens comes off the camera.
fanuja Posted June 1, 2008 Author Share #3 Posted June 1, 2008 I keep trying and I can't get the lens to unscrew. I am worried that I will damage it.
masjah Posted June 1, 2008 Share #4 Posted June 1, 2008 I keep trying and I can't get the lens to unscrew. I am worried that I will damage it. I wonder if you could clarify what it is you are trying to do (speaking as one who knows very little about these camera). Is it a "collapsible" lens which you are trying to open up in order to use (the instructions you quote might suggest that) or are you actually trying to remove the lens from the body? Dan States Posted June 1, 2008 Share #5 Posted June 1, 2008 If you are trying to extend a collapsable lens you need to just pull is out THEN turn slightly to the right. If you are trying to take the lens off you just unscrew the entire lens. (Righty tighty lefty loosy) This IS a 50mm Elmar right? It it's a 35 it does not extend. Best wishes Dan
roguewave Posted June 1, 2008 Share #6 Posted June 1, 2008 If the lens has been on the body, unused for years, you might try a little lubricating oil applied using a Q-tip around the base of the lens and let sit for a few minutes. Then try unscrewing it. I did this for a friend last year with his father's III.

Best wishes Dan Hello Dan, I finally figured out that the lens is indeed a 35mm, so that explains why it won't pull out. Now on to the next part which is trying to get the lens to unscrew. This experience with the Leica has been humbling. I have never even held one in my hands before and the only Leicas that I have seen have been in advertisements. Thanks Again, Joe
