Hey Folks,

Any thoughts as to what is happening here and what can be done about it? I was photographing this tiny turtle shel today when I noticed the serious optical issue (don't know how to describe it) that occurred when I would stop down. The issue seems to leave when I open up my aperture, but that is not a solution because I need to shoot at f8/f11 to get the depth-of-field I want. What could be happening here?

Have you had a look at the lens diaphragm off-camera? If you set the aperture completely stopped-down, and then manually operate the diaphragm closing lever, does the diaphragm close normally? Does it look OK from both sides? Does it work OK with the lens at its closest focus position?

Yep, aperture seems to be stopping down and opening up smoothly, off-camera. Bizarre. Just used the lens outside, at higher f-numbers, focused to infinity with no problems. So it definitely just happens in the macro range only.
