M8 Availability

I've been asking my dealer and the sole importer here in Hong Kong. Their response are the same. They will have quite a large batch of M8 here from early to mid October. Price is yet to be confirmed, but estimated to be around HKD 35,000.-, may be less by experience. Hope Leica really learned from their DMR experience.

Best,

Matthew

Well, here's what I've been able to piece together over the weekend - none of this official - the only official Leica commitments are still "4th quarter" or "fall" of 2006.:

1. PhotoKina demo M8s will still have betaware as far as final image quality - user interface should be polished, though..

2. M8 firmware development should be done roughly 2 weeks after PK ends. Which seems to square with S. Reid's understanding that it will be a bit before he gets a camera he can show pictures from.

3. Shipments begin SOME week in November. Actual week for the U.S. to be determined when the big guys meet in Koln during PK. Guess it depends on how fast they can stuff CDs into the M8 boxes and feed v. 1.0 into the body ROMs..

Mark--

Don't fret about the US getting the lion's share (not the British Lion's share anyway).

I worked for Leica US for ten years, and believe me, everyone thinks someone else is getting his share. A small dealer may have to wait several months for his first sample of a new product; the big dealers may get a couple dozen almost immediately, but that still isn't enough for their backorders.

On this side of the pond, the complaint was always that 'the Japanese are getting North America's share.'

Just practice your meditation while you patiently await your dealer's call. :)

It would be great if they could get them out before the 4-day T-day weekend!!!

My dealer still is saying mid October.

Phase one is not doing the firmware, it is Jenoptik.

Phase One is the company of Capture One and that is the software for raw processing

The software for Digital capture remote is most likely Jenoptik, which also makes MF backs

A change in technology won't outdate the M8.

Cheers,

Sean

could you explain that Sean

TIA

Michiel

I'm no Sean, so take this is as a humbly offered poor substitute, but if the combination of:

-- L glass (and all the other great glass, like Canon RF glass),

-- the way the M8 sensor takes and interprets the light sent its way,

-- how the images produced translate into the medium you use to present your images,

-- and the way the camera feels and operates all make for a great RF camera,

then if a great RF camera is what you actually need, new/different technology isn't going to change that. New technology may lead you to desire other things, but that's all about something else entirely.

When the camera is delivered and people can start to put it through its paces in a way that most will want to use it (including questions raised in Sean's article), we'll know if it is a great camera in the right hands, or a great looking red badged gadget for any pair of hands.
