I expect Erwin's grumpier than usual after the roasting he got for posting the M8 pictures of the tarty model and the wall without permission.

After the reading of the analysis the conclusion seems to be that this lens is good for the price, similar to the Zeiss Biogon 28/2.8 (I don't believe this). This is true, but not all the true. The new Elmarit seems to be a lens as good as the Summicron at all coincident apertures, except for a slightly lower contrast of the finer detail and a loss of contrast at the borders and corners. That's OK.

What Puts does not say is that in the M8 the two lenses are even more similar in performance.

Another perspective that is avoided is the comparison with other lenses. Except for the Summilux 50mm or the Summicron 75mm, the Summicron 28mm was the best lens in the M line in terms of contrast of fine detail Therefore, if the new Elmarit is similar, and cosidering the price and size, the final conclusion should not be so cold.

I recommend to compare the MTF graphs for the new 28/2.8 ASPH at 1:2.8 with the graphs for the 35/2 ASPH, the 35/1.4 ASPH, the 50/2, the 24/2.8 ASPH, the 28/2.8 pre-ASPH...or the Zeiss ZM 28/2.8... see the shape of the 40lp/mm and 30lp/mm curves (the two lower pair of curves)... you can also see and compare the lines for 5 and 10lp/mm, very high until 16mm for the new Elmarit.

Considering the price and size, this new lens is not a fair lens... it is simply astounding, specially if used with the M8. The 28/2 ASPH is faster and is a better performer overall, but the price is much higher and it is a bigger lens.

I am waiting to read Sean Reid's comments, but I recommend to take account not only of Puts' analysis, but also of the complementary information from Leica (MTF graphs) and careful personal testing before getting any conclusion.

I've no doubt you're right. This is the lowest cost ASPH lens and if I didn't already have the Summicron, it would be a must have purchase. I'd find a small lens set consisting of the 90mm f4, the 50mm f4 and the 28mm f2.8 would be a very attractive travel set.

Mark,

I think you'll find that the fingerprint of the 28/2 at f2.8 and f4 is different. While this lens is very desirable for a number of reasons, there are always compromises. My friend who used an M8 and the new lenses for three weeks will still buy a 28/2 when he has the cash, based on what he's seen of my shots with the 28/2.

As for Sean's opinions, it's a matter of taste. Trust your OWN eyes.

Hi William L.,

Do you mean based on the low resolution internet shots, or on a real print? Just curious.

William B,

Did you REALLY think we were so shallow?! :) He's done prints from the full Agfa scan files, but I'm talking about fingerprint here and I'd guess you will be able to detect the difference from large picture posts here, just as you can with the 35/2 and 35/1.4 ASPH's, only the 28/2 has more corner resolution than the 35/1.4. The 28/2 has an almost magical soft touch with the light at f2.8.

Enjoy your new lens. If I were made of $$$, I'd be tempted to mount one on my MP .58 when shooting in daylight at f5.6. I miss using my tiny 35/2 Type II which was for many years my travel lens, but as you know (from your own), the 35/2 ASPH flat blows it away when I can get it to behave. The 28/2 almost never misbehaves; hope your new lens works as well.

Now you even have a spare hood for your 35/2 ASPH! :D Wonder if that means that you can use a 12504 hood with it for a better view? Probably not...

These are the kind of comments on lenses I'm really interested in - its going to be quite difficult to decide on which lens is for you without trying them out and seeing whether they do what you want. For example I have a 35cron v3 which I think is best for me, its sharp, draws really well, and has a lovely smooth transition to the OOF areas. I owned the 35lux asph and also compared the pre-asph v4 and the cron asph to it. The one I kept was the v3 pre asph for the above reasons. Digital will make life more interesting. My cron is probably of lower contrast than the asphs, but its not harsh in any way. With film I would push process to increase contrast. I just scanned a normal slide from this lens and tweaked contrast in photoshop with a printed result better than I got before. So I see it that digital could have the effect of changing priorities and emphasis between lens qualities when compared to film. Please keep posting the subjective impressions.

The Leica website does not say much about it but according to Leica practice this new 28/2.8 should be as good as the 28/2 from f/2.8 on.

As much as i would hesitate to purchase the M8 for different reasons, I would buy this little gem in a heartbeat if i were on the market for a 28mm lens.

There is a detailed test (comparison with 28/2) available in Puts Webseite see:

Testreports
