Epson 3800 and Ilford Galerie Gold Silk

Hello Calvin--

I have been using this paper since getting my 3800 recently, and am absolutely thrilled with it. I print exclusively black and white, and after wearing out yet another Epson 1280 with Piezography inks and a CIS, I was looking for a [wider format] printer, and thought I'd try the "factory" inks [ultrachrome K3]. I based my decision, in part on others' recommendations [Especially Jack Flesher, who posts here and on GetDPI.com, as well having information about some of the new papers on Outbackphoto.com, as well as other forums]. I've not only had no disappointment, but am getting great prints that exceed my expectations, and the results I was getting before.

The factory profiles have been working well for me, and I actually somewhat prefer the regular driver to the AWB prints. There are some custom profiles available for download on line [i'll see if I can find them, and post a link if I can]. I am delighted to be printing on glossy paper again, and while I'm looking forward to printing this weekend on the new Harman paper, feel that the Gold Fiber Silk is excellent in it's tonal range, has great d-Max, has no metamerism with these inks and is priced less than the Harman.

By the way, if you check Inksupply.com you'll find that there is now a CIS available. I also recently got an e-mail newsletter from Jon Cone, and it looks like the Piezography inks will be availble in cartridges for the 3800, so I'm set.

Cheers,

Norm

Also consider using this paper in the 3800 with the QTR B&W (Quadtone RIP) profiles.

Google QTR and for $50 you get a whole slew of great B&W settings with more warm/cool/sepia variations than you can think of or need. And best of all you can download versions to use with OE inks. For the 2200 they have settings for MIS and Cone also, not sure about these with the 3800.

Agree with Neil and Norm - excellent paper which gives very good results in the 3800. I use the Canned Profile for Colour and use Advanced Black & White for monochrome.

I've used it some, using ABW mode and been pleased. The only issue I have is that it doesn't track thru the printer properly and the print head strikes the edge of the paper, marking it. Not an issue when using a matte, but not good and probably not good for the printer. I'm using the rear manual feed. Anyone else have this problem? Does this paper require a thickness setting adjustment for the 3800?

I've been using the K3 inkset for a few years now and would never go thru the hassle of third party ink systems again. I think the Epson inks are great.
