IcemanYQQ Posted September 14, 2006 Share #1 Posted September 14, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Someone had to mention it, so it might as well be me. I appreciate that the M8 comes bundles with Capture 1 LE, which is pretty cool, but I use Apple's Aperture almost exclusively in my entire digital workflow. Does anyone know if Apple plans to support the DNG format? It would be a real shame if they ignored this segement of the market share.

nemeng Posted September 14, 2006 Share #2 Posted September 14, 2006 This digital forum thread from a few weeks ago may be of help: http://www.leica-camera-user.com/digital-forum/4222-m8-raw-files.html Basically... don't hold your breath :?)
losta Posted September 15, 2006 Share #3 Posted September 15, 2006 DNG is a universal and open format created by adobe. I think apple would be silly not to include support for it in Aperture 2.0 if thet want to continue to appleal with serious photographers. I'm a big apple fan but not one who is overly impressed with aperture version 1.
scjohn Posted September 15, 2006 Share #4 Posted September 15, 2006 losta: That was a GREAT post and one I agree with! I am an apple fan too but I am VERY disappointed with Aperture. I too hope Apple will support the M8 softwate and make additional improvements as well. What makes the post GREAT however is that you admit to being an apple fan but then actually complain about Aperture. Perhaps you may agree that while Apples are great, the sometimes blind praise chanted by apple loyalists takes on an almost cult-like air that gets a bit tiresome even for a fan. But listen to me going on... The M8 is out and I'm posting about apple? This Kool aid tastes really odd...
losta Posted September 16, 2006 Share #5 Posted September 16, 2006 Aperture is a good idea and I hope apple will continue to improve it. I haven't been able to get my head around it and continue to use photoshop for RAW workflow though I also put small jpegs into iphoto for ease of viewing. IcemanYQQ Posted September 16, 2006 Author Share #6 Posted September 16, 2006 Aperture is an amazing program, and one that I use for my entire digital process, from ingest straight through to archiving. As good as I find Aperture, it still has some major shortcomings. Most I can live with, but not being able to read the DNG format should be a tremendous thorn in the side of the Apple programmers. rosuna Posted September 16, 2006 Share #7 Posted September 16, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Apple will announce something the day before the opening of Photokina. I hope it will be Aperture 2.0.

Please take a look at my post "DNG Myth" over on the "M8 and bundled software (Macintosh?)" thread. Kept in mind that RAW support in Aperture is defined by the system and not the application itself. Additionally, beleive it or not, DNG support is provided by Apple and behaves similar to other RAW applications.
KevinA Posted September 17, 2006 Share #9 Posted September 17, 2006 DNG is a universal and open format created by adobe. I think apple would be silly not to include support for it in Aperture 2.0 if thet want to continue to appleal with serious photographers. I'm a big apple fan but not one who is overly impressed with aperture version 1. I use Aperture, in fact my business is now built around it's workflow. It's fantastic, it's brilliant and it does have faults. The good easily out shines the bad, I expect it to get better and better, the versions way of doing things is superb, I use it when doing a search for a client, I collect all the images that fit the request and store them in a new Album for that search, I crop adjust colour contrast etc and at a click send them as low res watermarked jpg's. Later and it could be months later if the high res is requested anyone can go to the Album and send a high res from there, the same crop colour contrast etc, the files ave not been sitting there as huge tiffs but just a simple set of instructions taken very very little space. I have smart albums set up so whenever I upload new files if they meet the criteria of the smart album it gathers them up, that's instant filling. They are still in the original Project as well, infact the same image can be in several Albums at the same time, they take up little space as again they are only a set of instructions, the original raw stay utouched on the hards drive. If you work in raw and have a lots of images to sort after a shoot Aperture is the way to go, if you want to archive them and easily retrieve them later, Aperture is the way to go. Aperure is brilliant at handling clients work and requests and turning a job around very quickly at top quality. Kevin.
KevinA Posted September 17, 2006 Share #10 Posted September 17, 2006 Aperture is an amazing program, and one that I use for my entire digital process, from ingest straight through to archiving. As good as I find Aperture, it still has some major shortcomings. Most I can live with, but not being able to read the DNG format should be a tremendous thorn in the side of the Apple programmers. Aperture does read DNG, but not very well, it only reads DNG from cameras that it can already read the RAW file from. I f I convert my Kodak SLR/n files to DNG Aperture still can't read them. I hope Apple correct this soon. As it's been a long time since any updates or bug fixes for Aperture I'm expecting a major upgrade very soon. I think version 2 will make Aperture a must have foe everyone. Kevin.
