I've been an admirer of Leica Cameras for a while and have spent many a weekend with my nose pushed up against the local camera shop looking at them.

But I'm now holidaying in Colorado and am finding my Digital SLR is great for the outdoors but is getting a bit bulky for my city trips.

Or so thats how I am justifying it to my wife:0)

I have had a look at a few reviews and the D-Lux 3 comes out really well but am a bit worried it is not as portable as the C-Lux2?

So what do you think a D-Lux3 or C-Lux2?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Coverack,

in my opinion it depends on your needs! If you´d like to do some great post-shoot work with your files in Photoshop then the D-Lux3 is the alternative, because of her RAW-file capability. Otherwise, and especially for prints below U.S. letter size or digital files for the web the C-Lux2 is definitive sufficient. Portability is not the worth to think about, both cameras will fit to the pocket of your jacket (I assume you are not wearing S-size or smaller;) ). You will enjoy the new possibilities: never without camera due to a bulky camera bag.

Regards

Thomas.

Dear Coverack,

I have a D-Lux3 and it is quite portable. It is also quite light and easy to carry. You would appreciate the Raw capability after a while so, I would recommend it to you.

I have been using it for a month and carried it everywhere. I also advise you to get a carrying case for protection, its light weight and slippery build material makes it easy to drop accidentally.

I hope this helps,

I carry my C-Lux1 everyplace, all the time, and only like it more & more all the time. I have lots (too many!) of other cameras for all sorts of purposes, most of which purposes for me rarely come up, but it's the C-Lux I'm never without, because it can fit in anything. But if you want more of an all 'round or fotog camera & if you already lug a dslr in the woods, &c, then you prolly want the D-Lux. It's practically as portable -- just like the old film Leica C-1, which -- did I mention? -- I also usually always have near. (A D-Lux3 or C-1 would prolly fit in the same case, if you carried either of them in a case.)

Good luck with the wife! ;)

I suppose the obvious question is do you use RAW with your dSLR?

Thanks everyone for the advise and help - I'm popping into Denver today to have a look at both cameras so I'll let you know how I get on................

To answer the question on RAW I do normally shot the DSLR in RAW and have a play with Photo Elements on my computer - Nothing too difficult but it has got me out of some trouble.

The RAW is important but in truth I'm still torn between the two mainly due to the portability aspect because I would like a camera that I don't feel in a few months that I want to leave it at home.

Maybe I should let my wife make the decision, she's good at that :D

Thanks again and it's good to see so many replies from Manchester as when I get home I know I can get some good shots..................

The deed is done and am now the proud owner of the D-Lux3 and case - I think what won it over for me was the look of it and the RAW capability.

The size of both allows for everyday use and I have already been using the camera (on the delivered battery) on my trip downtown.

Thanks again
