SD card scam on Amazon

While waiting for the magical fw update that will allow our M8's to speak to SDHC cards, I have been noticing the rapid drop in SD card prices.

Based on a posting by RobertW at

I went looking for 2GB 133x Transcend SD cards so I could pick up some write speed, compared to a 150x card. In my search today, these cards turned up at prices in the US$19 range, except for a stand-out price of $8.85 on Amazon.

I've been a very happy Amazon customer for years. I logged on to buy 5 of these guys. When I got to the last page of the order process, the shipping was more then $30.

They must be coming from overseas, but what a scam.

I'll keep waiting and watching.

Bill,

were these from one of their partner vendors? Cause that sounds ridiculous.

I buy flash cards from amazon regularly. If it does not say ' eligible for super saver shipping ', it is not directly from amazon but from a merchant partner. Amazon shipping is free if you are willing to wait.

I have received counterfeit cards from amazon partners, but never directly from amazon, who buy directly from the manufacterer. I only buy directly and never use amazon partners for these reasons.

It's something a lot of the Amazon affiliated sellers do when selling memory cards. You can find them for under £1, but the p&p charges bump it up to the 'proper' price. I'm guessing that they do that in order to look competative - in other words once one company does it the others have to follow suit and have a low 'up front' price.

Provided you're aware of that, and the total price is reasonable, then you won't get burned - though I accept it's misleading if you don't realise what's happening.

I told Amazon and their response was that they don't set the handling charges for their affiliates.

To me, the problem is that to set a price so low implies that the goods are suspect.

It also muddies the situation with regard to any vendor that Amazon will work with. It's too bad -- my idol has clay feet. :(
