chris_livsey Posted May 2, 2008 Share #1 Posted May 2, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) Recently unveiled (April 29th) statue of Fred Dibnah in Bolton. He is holding a lightning conductor from when he worked as a steeplejack. Fred's trademark jacket shows the buttons are on the "ladies" side on the left as opposed to the men's side on the right. The sculptor explained that while she was researching for the statue she watched a film clip where Fred was doing the voiceover and he mentioned a statue of a famous man that had been created hundreds of years before. "Fred said when the sculptor discovered he had put the buttons on the wrong way round, the girl's way, he had killed himself - which was such an over reaction to a small oversight. It tickled me that Fred found it amazing that someone could get so het up about it. So I thought it would be a sort of nod to the man - a kind of in' joke for Fred." elansprint72 Posted May 2, 2008 Share #2 Posted May 2, 2008 Not a good likeness, is it? And the cap is wrong too.
chris_livsey Posted May 2, 2008 Author Share #3 Posted May 2, 2008 Not a good likeness, is it? And the cap is wrong too. Thought someone would say that pretty quickly It was the consensus of those viewing today that the money had been wasted. That is the polite version. Personally, a cast of "the' cap in bronze on a mount would, I thought, have been a touching tribute. (also much cheaper)
cocker Posted May 3, 2008 Share #4 Posted May 3, 2008 I agree with Pete on the likeness and the cap( was the sculptor a southerner? ) but I think you have taken a good photograph Chris.
andybarton Posted May 3, 2008 Share #5 Posted May 3, 2008 Certainly if I didn't know this was a statue of him, I wouldn't recognise him.

chris_livsey Posted May 3, 2008 Author Share #7 Posted May 3, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) Just quick jpeg no claim to merit to put the statue in situ. Not a good place to work but maybe the betfred shop could be used to advantage. Thanks for the comments guys, thought it would save you a trip unless you were going anyway. I was visiting the Pete Davis "Wildwood" exhibition at the museum 18 x 20 inch C type contacts.

I was visiting the Pete Davis "Wildwood" exhibition at the museum 18 x 20 inch C type contacts. They have also got Humphrey Jennings "Mass Observation" pictures of Bolton - well worth a look. But this is also the council that sold off 1/2 million pounds worth of the museums ethnography collection because they were hard-up and spent 11/2 million on "rebranding" i.e. repainting Dustbin Lorries with a new logo to reflect the ethnic diversity of the borough and having a new letter head on my rate demand.
chris_livsey Posted May 3, 2008 Author Share #9 Posted May 3, 2008 Strange you say that. The better half and I took coffee at Costa next to the Town Hall and one of those ride on little sweepers went past and I did notice the logo and thought " how much has someone conned them for that ?" I was much taken by the KEEP OFF on the lions BTW.

Well - were all supposed to be orderly, tidy, clean and well-behaved now. Can you imagine having sex with Tessa Jowell or Ruth Kelly (or David Milliband for the ladies)

elansprint72 Posted May 4, 2008 Share #17 Posted May 4, 2008 Well, it's come to me who the statue looks like- it's Alf Molyneaux, that miner bloke who Fred took on his traction-engine drive around the UK. Perhaps the "artist" got them confused?
stunsworth Posted May 4, 2008 Share #18 Posted May 4, 2008 I was speaking last night to a friend who went to the unveiling. Let's just say he wasn't impressed with it either.
wda Posted May 4, 2008 Share #19 Posted May 4, 2008 I think it looks more like a young James Callaghan! (Former PM)
