davidschumaker Posted May 1, 2008 Share #1 Â Posted May 1, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) Part of the reason I like my Leica rangefinder digital camera is the smaller package. I normally use a MacPro Book. Has anyone used the Asus Eee PC (7inch screen) for traveling with a digital camera? It seems that it would lighten my load. Advertisement Posted May 1, 2008 Posted May 1, 2008 Hi davidschumaker, Take a look here Asus Eee PC for traveling with M8. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
robsteve Posted May 1, 2008 Share #2 Â Posted May 1, 2008 I don't think you will be able to deal with the M8 files if you are shooting in DNG. Isn't the Asus runing Linux and also doesn't it have a small 8gb hard drive? Â I saw the small MacBook air a few nights ago and it was only a pound heaviers than the Asus. You may want to look up the specs. The MacBook Air is quite expensive though.
bill Posted May 1, 2008 Share #3 Â Posted May 1, 2008 I bought an Asus EEE less than a month ago. Small, light, compact, decent screen for size, decent range of built in software - BUT - Â Tiny hard drive - you can get around this by carrying an external drive - it'll power it through the USB 2.0 ports, but you are starting to compromise on the size. Â Tiny keyboard - I am used to a Samsung Blackjack, and, years ago, was able to touch type on a Psion, but this is one of the worst I have met. Â The killer, though, is that I am taking it back at the weekend - it won't boot up anymore. You can't recover from the recovery disc (provided) so it is effectively "bricked". Â Think again. LichMD Posted May 1, 2008 Share #4 Â Posted May 1, 2008 I purchased an Asus Eee for my mother in law who travels frequently to Asia. Lovely little computer, but the screen is tiny has poor resolution and couldn't handle DNGs. I purchased a MacBook Air for myself (mixed business and personal), I travel about 70k miles per year and it's a dream. Aperture runs on it almost as quickly as on my MBP. I also have a small OWC 360Gb external drive that all my M8 and DP-1 files are transfered to while I travel. Actually my Aperture library stays on the external drive to save space on the MBA. Asus is supposed to be bringing out a 9 inch version of the EEE, but if it's not running a decent processor (the current one is very slow) it won't be much good for photo processing. The MBA is more money, but behaves like a MBP in a small easy to carry package. Cheers j
thrid Posted May 3, 2008 Share #5  Posted May 3, 2008 Asus is releasing a faster model, with a slightly higher resolution and larger screen (8.9 inch). Apparently these are already shipping in Asia. Sometime this year we should see a version powered by Intel's new Atom chip.  Also take a look at the tiny new HP.  Liliputing  There are articles all over the web that show you how to install XP on one of these machines.  You can also get Lightzone for Linux.
