rick123 Posted September 13, 2006 Share #1 Posted September 13, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi everyone. I bought my M6 & Summilux-M 50mm f/1.4 (pre-ASPH) from Ken Hansen in NYC 13 years ago. I was wondering where in the U.S. would be a good place to purchase a M8. How well do you think this lens will work with the M8 as my only lens? Thanks in advance!
Advertisement Posted September 13, 2006 Posted September 13, 2006 Hi rick123, Take a look here Where to Buy Leica M8 in the U.S. & What Lens?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
marknorton Posted September 13, 2006 Share #2 Posted September 13, 2006 How about... your local Leica dealer? You could try Wal-Mart, but I doubt they would have it in stock amongst the piles of other junk they sell. Your 50mm will become a short tele-photo on an M8, good for portraits but most people will want to use a wider lens such as 28mm or 35mm. The new (as yet, still rumoured) 28mm f2.8 ASPH seems to be an ideal starter lens.
john_f Posted September 14, 2006 Share #3 Posted September 14, 2006 Rick, I'm sure everyone has their favorite dealer(s), but two very good (authorized) Leica dealers in NYC that I would recommend are Rich Pinto's The Photo Village, Inc. and Tamarkin (Fogg Camera Bags). Since the Leica M8 has a crop factor of 1.3x (i.e. 50 x 1.3 = 65mm), I would recommend getting either a 35mm Summilux-M or Summicron-M lens (which would correspond to about a 50mm on an M8) or better yet, the brand new Elmarit-M 28mm f2.8 Asph as suggested by Mark. This new lens would correspond to about a 35mm w-a lens on the M8. IMHO, I believe it's fair to assume that this new 28mm Asph was designed with the digital M8 in mind. As Mark wrote, the best thing would be to first contact your nearest Leica dealer. Delivery is due to start in late Oct or early Nov (for those who pre-ordered months ago that is ...) Guest rubidium Posted September 14, 2006 Share #4 Posted September 14, 2006 Ken Hansen is still around and still an authorized dealer Leica equipment - and still a real pleasure to talk to and deal with. The only difference is that he's dealing out of his apartment now and not a storefront. Just a few months ago, I bought my 280-4.0 Apo-Telyt-R from him.
