This was taken at San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary in Irvine, CA. This is another bird species in which the females are more brightly colored. This is a female in breeding plumage. They're migratory birds, and once the female lays her eggs, she flies south and makes the male tend the eggs and hatchlings.
