amedick Posted September 13, 2006 Share #1 Posted September 13, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Just been on a 3 1/2 week vacation trip with family. Was concerned about having an on the road backup of my photos in case something happened to my laptop. In the past would use my iPod to backup photos. This trip was a mostly road and RV trip. I used my TomTom 910 GPS navigator to back up my photos for the trip. This particular model, which has a hard disk in it to store the maps of Europe, Canada and USA, has about 12 Gb spare space. I used this spare space to back up my photos regularly during the trip.. Just wanted to highlight this in case you have a TomTom GPS with hard disk, and want a backup system for your photos without carrying extra boxes etc. I suspect other models and manufacturers will have spare space in the future that you could use like this. My model even comes with an extra base to make connecting to your laptop easier. Best Regards

nemeng Posted September 13, 2006 Share #2 Posted September 13, 2006 Alternatively, why not use the right tool for the job? A (P)ersonal (S)torage (D)evice! PSD's are dedicated to storing image files and the better ones have much faster card-read times than any GPS unit. FWIW see the summary I have of a few of the better models in the FAQ at: Leica FAQ - Digital Accessories & Issues
amedick Posted September 14, 2006 Author Share #3 Posted September 14, 2006 Andy, thanks for the models and review link. My post was around backing up photos on a laptop, while on a long vacation trip, without buying or carrying any extra boxes or cables. The GPS I mentioned, which I bought to get around Europe, Canada and USA, just connects into the laptop via a USB 2 cable, and transfers at USB 2 speeds. Its 12 Gb of idle disk space made a good backup for my photos on my mostly road trip....... During the evening, I would back up the photos on my laptop to the GPS, while doing my travel planning for the next day. Just wanted to share this approach/possibility.
