Request for help fixing viewfinder's vertical misalignment

Trusty M6 didn't like the last knock. Focus still seems accurate, even when I take the trouble to measure to the film plane mark. But the slight vertical misalignment keeps putting me off.

Behind the stick-on red dot I know there's a screw. If memory serves one has to completely remove that screw to get at the adjustment screw itself.

Anybody got a link or a more coherent and informed explanation how to put it right? Seems a bit excessive to send it off for repair for such a trivial issue. Too bad the M6 doesn't have the screw in plain sight like the old Ms and the MP.

Won't that be the the rangefinder paralax you're experiencing? Like your lens is wide open and you loose part of the bottom of the image. If that's the case, then it's a rangefinder thing and it's normal. I get that on all M3, M6 & M7 especially with my Summilux 50 asph.

Thanks for your thoughtful response.

I don't think its rangefinder parallax because

i) the last time I saw something like this was 1979, the first Leica I ever owned, a Leica CL that the owner warned me about before I purchased

and

ii) the other M doesn't display this

and

iii) I'm talking about whats displayed in the viewfinder, not what's shot on film

Then this must be your perfect opportunity to upgrade your M6 VF to a late M7 Bright-line VF (MP View Finder).

It cost me about $300 last 2005 with Don Goldberg (WI, USA) or if you're short budgeted since most likely the price of Leica parts are higher by now. Don can modify your VF to a brighter focus plane at half the price. Of course align your VF at most likely no charge since he has to take it apart. It will be smart and cheaper to include a CLA due to the disassembly. Last time it took Don 3 weeks to service mine.

Here's Don Goldberg's link DAG Camera Parts

Hope this helps,

"a special tool to adjust . . . The tool costs $200 years ago"

Tobey, now that you've reminded me, I remember that. The repair job, less shipping, will only cost that amount. Thanks for responding.

Heh, heh, thanks Ron! Seriously tho', that is a good suggestion. Unfortunately I was impatient and had the "MP Viewfinder Upgrade" performed two years ago.

Ron, all of your suggestions were good, however I don't think my budget can yet handle this little viewfinder problem I've attached below.

I hope all your M cameras age more gracefully and don't show the discoloration my trusty M6 developed. I'm told that repairing the discoloration, caused by age, on the rangefinder's beam splitter is about the most expensive repair to be done on an M6.

Email that image to Don Goldberg dagcam@chorus.net and see wehat he has to say. He's a nice guy and responds to inquiries immediatly.

In fact when my M7 was 4 months old and suddenly stopped taking snaps. I called him on my cell for support and he determined that "I need batteries". =)

Good luck with your M6,

Thanks Ron!

By the way, I keep forgetting to say how much I love the B/W work you've displayed here on the forum, please keep it up.

No problem Dave and thanks likewise for the compliment on my B&W photos. Recently I've been shooting mostly with my Nikon F5 and Rollei. But I have a roll of the new Tmax on my M7. I'll post some snaps after I finish the roll.

Best

Dave

I was riding my bike last thurs and misjudged my braking! end result was me sat in the middle of Leiden highstreet. I had my m6ttl in my trusty billingham and thought no more about it. On fri I took a look through and sure enough the vertical finder was off. I had read somewhere of someone banging the camera which fixed the problem so thought I would give it a go. With the camera in my right hand I banged the base 3-4 times quite hard on my left palm and sure enough it realigned itself. This has to be worth a try before you start spending money. Don't try with a balsam adhesive finder though as you may start separating the finder and take the lens off so as not to maybe dislodge anything in it. good luck j
