What's a basic set-up? Body only will be $4,500 to $5,000 in the US (likely the middle of that range). Leica lenses will be the same price they already are. The least expensive lens now is the 50 f/2.8 @ around $1,000.

For the M7, I believe there is a 'starter' discount if it is bought with the 'normal' 50mm f/2 lens - but since the 50 will no longer be 'normal' with the crop factor, that may no longer be everyone's idea of a starter lens.

The equivalent of a "50" on the M8 would be the 35mm f/2 ASPH - but it is about twice the price as the 50 f/2 - around $2,000. There's also a new 28mm f/2.8 predicted, at a price somewhere between the 50 and 35 f/2 lenses.

So VERY roughly speaking, an M8 with a not-too-exotic lens will run somewhere between $5,500 and $7,000 - perhaps with a combo discount, perhaps not.

On Friday, Leica lets the official cat out of the bag, and that's when we'll find out these sorts of details - things we can't guess from the pictures.

Yeah, completely out of my range, I'm afraid. I wonder how many people will actually buy one? I thought I'd spent a lot of money getting a D-LUX 2.

M8 territory is a whole different world, I guess.

People are queuing up to buy them...

right,

but with professionals it is little bit different.

They would be able to afford top models, but they know it is not about it.

It is about skills and briliant pictures, something noone can buy :-)

They do not need them.

Only "show off" people are buying these top model, people who want to present themself not by their work or photos but camera hanging aroung their neck.

maybe that is why here at Leica forum are threads like "can my Leica attract girls?". Oh, so pathetic.

That's a really disturbing statement. I am not a professional photographer, but a dedicated amateur. Yes, I will buy an M8, and yes, I can afford to do so. I'm not buying one to look good. I'm buying one because I want a digital camera to use with my M lenses, and because I love photography, and my M lenses. It strikes me as very snobbish to say, The only people who will be able to buy this are snobs who want to look good.

People are queuing up to buy them...

I asked on another forum if anyone has any evidence whatsoever for this particular assertion? But predictably got no reply.

I'm wondering seriously about this because there's been a lot of talk about the M8 being in short supply if one isn't on a waiting-list - and i'm in a position that means that i'll probably not be able to buy the camera until sometime early in 2007.

I'm therefore anxious that i'll then need to wait until late 2007 (or even later) if this is true, but i'm not willing to commit myself straight away on the basis of a very few individuals on a couple of Leica-enthusiast forums simply repeating this mantra.

So anyone got any sort of (even ballpark) figures?

My reseller told me that his waiting list is quite long. And we are not talking about a big pro shop here, just a normal one.

ok - well i asked at Sweden's main Leica dealer a couple months ago and they just laughed when i mentioned a waiting list.

I'm gonna go by there again this week and re-check - i frankly didn't want to go hassling them again because i don't want to be one of those time-wasters who nags about a waiting-list and then doesn't put their name on it.

But i honestly doubt the veracity of some of these 'long waiting lists' - i really do. I also think that internet forums are full of people who are saying that they're gonna buy a $5000 camera - but actually, a lot of them simply won't have the money.
