Epson printer R1800 + iProof RIP, help sought

I just bought an Epson R1800 printer and iProof RIP 2000 for it. Out of the box the colours are not good and I cannot improve results using the RIP. I am sure the problem(s) is profiling, but I believe I have all that correct, first using recommended settings, and then experimenting!

Not only do I have no joy, but I have agony! My equipment supplier is no help (simple salespeople) and the RIP supplier is slow to respond (different timezone).

Any helpful ideas out there?

Hi Erl,

We are using the Epson R1800 without any RIP, for graphic and photographic prints. My photos are shot in DNG and converted in Photoshop CS3/RAW converter. Graphic documents made in Illustrator and Indesign for print are saved as highres PDF and opened in Photoshop.

Download manufacturer/paper profile and use these settings in the print dialog box.

Exemp. I use Ilford Gold Fibre Silk;

Print with preview

Color management (IGGFS13_ER1800_PSPn.ICC)

Let Photoshop determine colors

Options/Colorhandling (choose profile)

Options/Printer Profile: Rendering Intent: Relative Colorimetric

Copies/pages----Print Settings: Premium Semi Gloss Photopaper

Color management--Print Settings: No color Adjustment

Hope this helps

Carl

Carl, thank you for your advice. I will try it later today and let you know what luck I have. I have been trying similar settings to the point where I suspect the ink set I am using. I will swap the inks over later today when I return to the office.

Your suggestions are much appreciated.

Here are some settings I use for printing (advertisement and magazinecover) proofs on Kokopelli MOAB photo satin. I can remember I was frustrated about the first prints as well. Something about the settings like 'Black point compensation', 'Speed' and 'Colormanagement.

The settings below are in Photoshop CS (not CS3) and Apple comp. On my computer I will have to set 3 different dialogboxes; Page set-up, Print, and after choosing print there will be the third one.

type: alt/cmd/p

Colormanagement, Source space: Document Adobe RGB (1998)

Print Space, Profile:xxxxxxxxxxxx(papermanufactorer)

Intent: Relative Colorimetric or Perceptual

Black Point Compensation UNCHECKED

OK choose print

Another dialogbox

Printer: Stylus Photo R1800

Settings: Standard

Medium: Premium Luster Photo paper

Modus: Advanced (no speed)

Quality: Photo RPM

Speed: UNCHECKED

Colormangement: NONE

(I hate those dialogboxes) Succes, Carl

Thanks again Carl. I agree with you about those damn print dialog boxes!

I took most of yesterday off to meet another forum member who was visiting Melbourne (my home town) and we had lunch and shot some pics together. It was great to get away from the printer for awhile. However, today is the day of reckoning. I MUST get it working. I will employ all your suggestions and report back on my luck.

Thank again.
