Funny to find a new post about happy owner of CL and 40mm when I logged on to ask this question. I guess Andy will be able to answer me, any others, feel welcome.

I have a CL and the 40 and 90 - C's and indeed I just love them.

Still there is this itch, wondering what I would gain in ergonomics and image quality if I were to switch to an M4 or M6 with a 35mm or 50mm 'fullsize' summicron .

Is there a big difference, between the bodies , between the lenses ? What is it ? I do a lot of street photography and want to work fast and precise, often prefocussed at hyperfocal or estimated range and preset exposure.

Andy, did you put of the other M lenses on the CL ? Is there a big difference ?

Interesting question..here my thoughts and am sure others will offer their view.

I have used the 35 cron and the 50 Cron on the CL, no problem. The 50 Cron brings up the 50 frame line and with the 35 you just have to add a bit to the existing 40 frame line in the viewfinder.

Regarding quality there is no difference to the M6, as essentially all the camera does is hold the film flat.

The ergonomics on the CL are a bit better than the M6 IMO because of the info in the viewfinder and the shutter speed dial..I would say the CL is a bit faster to use where focus and exposure are not preset but others may think differently.

Whilst the build 'heft' of the CL is not that of the M6 it certainly is robust and very carryable..also here an upside vs the M6 IMO.

Don't get me wrong my all time favourite M is the M6 classic but the CL, being able to take the M lenses...with NO focus issues, makes a great in your pocket mini M.

Again do not expect any change in image quality by changing to an M body..with change of lenses you may see some difference but very very little.

For the type of photography you do it sounds like you have exactly the right combination.

regards

Andy

The only thing I would add is, if you are going to stick with the CL and you do not know when it last had a CLA - if ever - invest in having one. You will be amazed at the difference in the camera once done, you will also have peace of mind that the meter and cell are correct. The cds cells do deteriorate over time - 12 years or so.

It is a great camera and due to its smaller size virtually invisible to most people when on the street.

That's definitely a good suggestion. Where can I get that done ? I'm from Belgium.

Just for anecdote, the meter is still accurate, even with the Wein Cell. It consistently gives the same results as my lightmeter, and I mean precise, as in mesuring grey cards and stuff !

But sometimes it gets stuck. Then I have fiddle a bit and it works again.....

As for the accuracy of the times, it seems ok. I shot greycards for filmcalibration and there is no bigger difference that 1/3 stop on any of the times, looking at the density of the negatives.

So if you are from Belgium (I work often in Brussels) there is a great repair center in Dusseldorf Germany.Foto Paepke...a very particular and high quality small business who repair all Leica including CL.

I just had mine done there and the work was, as always, perfect.

check out the details on the web under..Unsere Marken - Paepke Fototechnik Qualität die zählt

they speak english so should be no problem.
