TonySx Posted March 21, 2008 Share #2 Posted March 21, 2008 I use a copy.I sometimes use UFRaw to work on RAW images (surprise!) and it can be installed as an add-on for the GIMP. This means that when you finish with a RAW file and convert it to TIFF/JPG it automatically opens in GIMP. GIMP itself is different to Photoshop/Paintshop etc. 'cos it has a layout that takes a bit of getting used to. But it's not too bad and there's an immense online manual to help out. darkness30 Posted March 21, 2008 Share #6 Posted March 21, 2008 I use vuescan + Gimp on my Linux (Kubuntu) I dont see much difference with Adobe Photoshop but it would have been nice if Gimp were to handle 16bits per channel images still i am very happy about it. I am currently in transition from the 2.2 series to the 2.4 series as I upgrade machines. Cheers, Marc I have GIMP on a thumbdrive as a portable application and use it on my work computer (on which I have limited admin privs and cannot install PS, or any software for that matter). Frankly, I find it frustrating; but that's probably because I've never really trained on it, just took my PS training and dove right into the GIMP program. Worst feature on GIMP (IMO) is the unsharpening filter; way, way too much at the default setting. Otherwise it's a handy solution for resizing, changing resolution, cropping, adding a stroke border...all the little stuff that you like to do on the fly. It'll be interesting to see how all of our software programs withstand the coming online photo-editing ap onslaught when they get the bugs worked out of things like Cellsea and the online Photoshop. I also used to use SANE on Linux for scanner access until I discovered VueScan. I also have a 4GB memory stick with Ubuntu, GIMP & other goodies installed on it. I can play away and I can use an external drive/another stick for RAW pictures, etc. I shoot mostly slides, so I use this setup to make prints when needed.
