hi,

looking around for a new MP. a reliable shop i do alot of business with (mainly buy and selling of used leica gear though) says he has a new MP in stock but serial # starting 293.. he is willing to sell it for a few hundred less than the official distributor of Leica here, where their serial numbers these days are at 305...

should this matter? MP is all mechanical (except the light meter) so because its made earlier shouldn't really matter right? I don't plan on selling. i have never bought a new leica body (only used) and i'm going for a new MP to keep for a lifetime. but i'm willing to spend the money right now and i don't know if i need to go for the newer MP or this older one. both are unwrapped and pristine

please help :)

I would get the new one provided the dealer gives you at least a one year warranty. If it is an authorized Leica dealer (doesn't sound like it) you would get a country specific Passport warranty. The difference in the price between used and new should help you decide, a warranty may be worth that difference to you.

I think that's a good decision. The Leica warranties are really quite good although their service centers are a bit overstretched at the moment because of the M8. I bought a new M7 a couple of years ago that had been sitting on a dealer's shelf for years. It has an old serial nr. and Leica upgraded the VF to an MP type under the warranty. It took a while but they did a good job. Enjoy your MP, I have one and love it! :)
