mreddington Posted March 18, 2008 Author Share #3 Posted March 18, 2008 Correction: if you look at the site it is in German at 19.30 UTC but in English later at 22.30 UTC. And it says it is about oil tonight. I've never watched it before so maybe there is just a short item on Leica rather than a feature. I'll watch the German version and post if there is anything of interest.

mreddington Posted March 18, 2008 Author Share #5 Posted March 18, 2008 I just watched the German programme. There's a short item of around 5 min that starts a little less than 5 min into the programme after an item on SAP researchers in Israel. No revelations (no surprise here) but it was nice to see film of the Leica factory, which I hadn't seen before. There's something comforting about seeing people assemble lenses - makes my wallet itch! A short interview with Andreas Kaufman basically saying nothing but full of confidence. A figure I hadn't heard before is that they are producing around 1000 M8s per month. Also briefly features Berlin photographer Jim Rakete.
marknorton Posted March 19, 2008 Share #6 Posted March 19, 2008 English version is now online - look for Video on Demand. Other interesting statistic is that they still make 500 film cameras a month...

stevelap Posted March 19, 2008 Share #8 Posted March 19, 2008 No earth shattering revelations of course, but interesting nevertheless. Nice to see inside the factory and listen to the man himself.
delander † Posted March 19, 2008 Share #9 Posted March 19, 2008 It was interesting to see what appeared to be a small sequence showing lens assembly. But I was amazed to see that bare hands were being used and I wonder if it is a dust free environment? You can see a more comprehensive assembly of a Canon L lens on the Canon Museum site for comparison. Jeff
sdai Posted March 19, 2008 Share #10 Posted March 19, 2008 Again, there's not even a shadow of a "R" ... the system is dead.
lemalk Posted March 19, 2008 Share #11 Posted March 19, 2008 Thanks for the link and the heads-up. I was also surprised to see the lens assembled with bare hands. I think we all hope Leica makes it through the next few years with some more diverse offerings, albeit without Lee, and sees some financial success. God knows their products are wonderful, but that alone doesn't guarantee success.
