jlancasterd Posted March 13, 2008 Share #2 Posted March 13, 2008 12 cylinders, 24 litres, (1464 cu in). Now that is a real "muscle car", Mr Shelby. Is this a World War 1 aero engine? IIRC the engines in the original Chitty Bang Bangs, as raced at Brooklands, were 24 litre FIAT units originally used in WW1 biplanes and bought cheaply as war surplus. Who made the chassis - Railton? elansprint72 Posted March 13, 2008 Author Share #3 Posted March 13, 2008 John, This is a Bentley chassis, the engine is somewhat larger than the envisaged original http://http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Napier_Lion I think that this example was discovered in a timber yard providing power for the saws, etc. It is not a FIAT engine but was certainly designed for flying rather than motoring. dkCambridgeshire Posted March 23, 2008 Share #5 Posted March 23, 2008 I think it is a Napier "Broad Arrow" engine ... Napier Lion - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia ... interesting picture ... and in this context the use of "Broad Arrow" probably predated use of same expression to describe the HM Government arrow engraved on military equipment. dunk
