marknorton Posted March 19, 2008 Share #141  Posted March 19, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) Well, Handelsblatt does have some kind of cooperation with DW TV. But believe it or not, I weren´t aware that those guys were working on the Leica topic as well and had no contact with them. Maybe were either inspired by the article I wrote for our print edition. Or it´s just a weird cooincidence. At least, the only camera which was in operation when I interviewd Kaufmann was my M8 :  BTW I recently also visidted Peter Coeln in Vienna since I´m working on a historic piece about the introduction of the M3 in 1954. This was the real reason why I traveld to Solms. The interview with Kaufmann was just a by-product of this. (When I got in contact with Solms in the frist place Lee was still in charge...)   I made some funny shots at Westlicht showing Peter Coeln and a wodden model of the M3 used by Leica on the Photokina in 1955:  Some more shots here: Leica stuff - a photoset on Flickr  So, what lens is he using? 75mm Summilux? Whatever, he doesn't seem to be using an IR cut filter. I can only assume he's being used to test the new sensor upgrade (4750 Euro) with reduced IR sensitivity... Advertisement Posted March 19, 2008 Posted March 19, 2008 Hi marknorton, Take a look here Interview with Andreas Kaufmann on Handelsblatt.com. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Thomas Edwards Posted March 20, 2008 Share #142  Posted March 20, 2008 Thomas, as I've previously stated, former CEO Steven K. Lee - did in fact have a marketing vision - and was doing a good job - promoting the M8 camera with product placement activities/events with filmstars and TV personalities (also Leica's former PR head, Gero F. was involved with such arthouse projects).  Steven K. Lee also sponsored and promoted art projects/installations for Leica's Flagship-stores.  Kaufmann hired Lee for these kinds of ideas...    However, Andreas Kaufmann also likes to promote art exhibitions and he recently presented vintage works by a Magnum-photographer for his newly openned photo-gallery in Salzburg (just down the street from Austria's most famous contemporary art gallery, representing photographic works from the Estate of Andy Warhol).  Axel  Axel Sanders  ---  ...appreciate the clarification...a tie-in with art also seems like the way forward, since a leica is more a paint brush to canvas as compared to a canikon which, imho, is more a microscope to specimen in a clinical sense... I can only assume he's being used to test the new sensor upgrade (4750 Euro) with reduced IR sensitivity...  Mark, you´re right. (with respect to the lens, at least...) Kaufmann had a Lux 75/1,4 on his M8. He mentioned to me that it was a canadian version of the lens. It´s true that the had no IR cut filter on the lens. Unfortunatley I forgot to ask him why. Another funny detail about his M8 was that he had 2 screwed two (!) magnifiers on his M8...  BTW right now one can watch the DW TV video on our website: Handelsblatt.com: Service: Handelsblatt Video: Made in Germany - Aktuelle Nachrichten aus Wirtschaft, Politik, Unternehmen und Märkten (I´m not able to put a direkt link to the video.) Unfortunatly only in German. But it shows some interesting pictures from the lens production in soms. Yours Olaf
marknorton Posted March 22, 2008 Share #144 Â Posted March 22, 2008 Looked like they were making 90mm Summarits... Â What do they do, make lots of one lens for a while, then switch, or are there multiple areas like this making different lenses in parallel? Â Hardly a big production area and a rather dodgy looking false ceiling with air extraction vent. I have to say I was expecting a more rigorous cleanliness regime; fine to handle lens barrels by hand but what about the assembly of the lens barrels themselves? Do the technicians building those wear gloves?
marknorton Posted March 22, 2008 Share #145 Â Posted March 22, 2008 Another funny detail about his M8 was that he had 2 screwed two (!) magnifiers on his M8... Â Well maybe if he finds it difficult to focus, he'll get his engineers to design a variable magnification finder. Nothing like using your own products for real to identify how things can be improved...
