Grain

It often happens to me that, on the same roll, some photos turn out very grainy while others are clear as crystal...if this just a matter of getting the exposure wrong?

You didn't mention what kind of film you're referencing, but like with Tri-X for example, regardless of exposure, you will still see considerably more grain with more monotone type images... say a bunch of gray clouds in the sky or a texture with little dynamic range. I can't explain why this is, other than it seems to be an idiosyncrosy of Tri-X.

Andy and Dave, thanks a lot...I'm using whatever film I can get, usually Fuji, reala or HP5..I fear I underexpose quite often...I have a iiif and no meter so I pay the price for guessing...thanks again...

Sounds like underexposing, try using sunny 11 rather than sunny 16.

Also you will see grain much more in the shadow – mid-tone. If your subjects are in bright light with lighter tones they will show less grain than indoor shots that might have shadow areas.
