aldash Posted February 23, 2008 Share #21 Posted February 23, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) Yes, it's that good. I'm an owner of both a late model M3 like yours and a classic M6. IMHO, those cameras are very, very nice, but the MP is still superior. I have a later M3 (single stroke) and an M4. I understand the MP is more like the M3. What features would the MP have, that my M3 does NOT have? I noticed that the MP uses a battery, so I suppose that is for a built-in meter, which the M3 does not have. Also, does the MP come with a choice of viewfinder magnifications, such as .72, etc.? I need help on choosing that. (I believe my M3 has .85). My M3 is in almost mint condition. If there is very little difference between the M3 and MP, then why would a person who has a minty M3 spend almost $4,000 to buy the MP? (Unless it is for collection purposes). rob_x2004 Posted February 23, 2008 Share #23 Posted February 23, 2008 What features would the MP have, that my M3 does NOT have? On the usability front the lightmeter, the viewfinder and rangefinder clarity, does the M3 have a separate take up spool? After rewind, which is film length dependent, with an MP you can unload, reload and advance to frame in well under twenty seconds without having to ever look at the thing. You can actually buy them, that helps, its new and in spec and you know, or should know that what comes out of the box will work. Dont get me wrong, I would like an M3 too...and a 6classic with the MP viewfinder upgrade...but...

R.Morrison Posted February 23, 2008 Share #25 Posted February 23, 2008 It might well be that I do not understand what you mean by 'feel' but if tactile delight is to be considered then bear in mind that an MP can be ordered via the A LA CARTE programme and the covering and and controls can be ordered according to the customer's preferences. As a leather-fetishist who is not too impressed by the stock covering of an off-the-shelf MP (it feels like 250 grit emery cloth, albeit with good grip) I enjoy the tactile and olfactory delight of the genuine leather covering. I think that the A LA CARTE programme is one of the better ideas that Leica has had (apart from the MP itself of course). R. Morrison
tobey bilek Posted February 24, 2008 Share #26 Posted February 24, 2008 When it will not take the brass film cassetes it became a dealbreaker for me. Certainly smoother than my two M6 models. The M2, M3, M2 R are like old friends. I do not think I will ever need another M camera.
nobbylon Posted February 24, 2008 Share #27 Posted February 24, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) After messing around with my new (to me anyway) BP MP all afternoon I can say yes it's a smooth camera. Is it smoother than my M6ttl (plenty of miles on the clock and recently serviced by Will van Manen)? Nope!!!! Do I think it's worth paying nearly £500 more than the late M6 classic I sold to help pay for it? Nope!!! Would I buy again, probably, but only because it was an itch that needed to be scratched! It does somehow feel tighter than the M6 cameras with a sturdier wind on lever and no rattling rewind crank and the viewfinder appears a bit more flare resistant. To my mind the real bargain metered M out there is a classic M6 with an MP style winder and the viewfinder upgrade. I've changed the cover for an aki-asahi already, see photo on the other thread and it feels much nicer than standard. I'm now going to just use it as intended and see how long the paint lasts and hopefully it will get as smooth as my M6ttl!!!

Morrison But the price to have a bascially stock MP with one or two changes (that surely cost Leica next to nothing) is obscene! Stock cameras for me or DIY recovering if one has gripes there. Why do I want so many more MPs? MP hammertone would be nice, specially if it was a one off 0.
batmobile Posted March 3, 2008 Share #29 Posted March 3, 2008 I am the lucky owner of two MPs. With eyes closed I can easily separate both from each other. One MP has an extremely smooth film transport but a slightly sticky shutter release. The other MP has a perfectly smooth shutter release but a bit of friction in the film transport. What I want to say is this: M cameras are not assembled by robots. There will be some variation in the production outcome. If you are happy, you get a camera where everything works perfectly smooth. I would not give anything for opinions like "MP is more smooth than M3" or whatever. It all depends on the exact cameras someone uses. What I can say is that I very much enjoy using these cameras. Best, Joachim quite. My mp and mp3 sound different when the shutter is fired but otherwise are almost identical in feel. Sooooo smooth, yet tight (rather than sloppy) Before the MP3 I ordered a used silver MP as a second body and the shutter felt heavy relative to teh BP MP, so much so that moving between the bodies caused me not to release smoothly due to the significant difference (I kept failing to get the shutter to release at the point I expected when moving from teh BP to the chrome one). It was smooth, but def much heavier, so I returned it. I can move from the MP3 to MP seamlessly now however. This might sound silly, but it was a genuine problem and although probably not indicative of a fault, was enough to spoil the use simply because of the gulf in requireed pressure. When you dont know the history of a used camera...you dont know....having found a touch of dry slide lube around the top plate I instantly decided to return it. whether this caused the weight or was in response to it by the prev user I dont know....
