Just wondering, anyone got any experience on which aperture actually provides the best results in terms of sharpness and colour. I guess generally the full opening is not quite as good as closed down a little. Is there anything like a "best aperture" to use in terms of sharpness and colour rendition? Does it change and is it different by lens? Anyone got any examples of a same image shot with different apertures? (I may try doing so myself one day with the lenses I have).

Normally the best overall performance is about 2-3 stops down. But remember DOF is not the same as sharpness. Most lenses give their peak lpm at quite wide apertures.

If you get Erwin Puts' book "the Leica Lens Compendium", he mentions the optimum aperture for each lens in his review of the lens. I have found his observations regarding this to be accurate.
