zapp Posted February 16, 2008 Share #1 Posted February 16, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) There has been more than one Apo-Extender 2x. What is the difference in performance and compatibility? The old version is non-ROM and was probably introduced with the 280/400 Apo lenses in the 80s. The new one is the ROM extender. Is there any visible difference between old and new in the images? 3 cam converter and ROM lens should work OK as far as I understand. As the Leica homepage somehow does not list the extenders anymore it is a real pain to find out about details and compatibility.
Advertisement Posted February 16, 2008 Posted February 16, 2008 Hi zapp, Take a look here Apo-extender 2x old vs.new. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
robsteve Posted February 16, 2008 Share #2 Posted February 16, 2008 Zapp: Both extenders are identical with the exception of the ROM contacts. The version with the ROM contacts is quite a bit bigger in diameter. The ROM version will not fit on the Leica SL2 because the ROM is in the way. The older non ROM APO will work on the older Leicaflexes, but not couple with the metering cams on the cameras. I just got a ROM 2x so the lens info gets transferred in my DMR shots. I will be selling my old APO 2x on Ebay shortly. Robert
wildlightphoto Posted February 16, 2008 Share #3 Posted February 16, 2008 The older non ROM APO will work on the older Leicaflexes, but not couple with the metering cams on the cameras. The non-ROM 2x APO extender has an R-only flange so it will not fit any of the Leicaflexes without modification. After replacing the extender's mount it will only fit the SL2 (as well as the R bodies) because the rear of the extender interferes with a light baffle at the top of the Leicaflex and SL mirror box. The SL2's light baffle has a cutout to clear the rear element.
robsteve Posted February 16, 2008 Share #4 Posted February 16, 2008 Doug is correct. I just tried my non-ROM (11262) APO 2x on my SL2 and it doesn't fit. When I try to make a new post I am getting a redirect to a page regarding agreeing to the forum rules. Is this something new? I get the same redirect when I try to PM a moderator to ask about the problem.
zapp Posted February 17, 2008 Author Share #5 Posted February 17, 2008 Thank you for the info, especially Doug for answering even the question not asked. I actually thought about adding an SL2 to my R, but if no version of the Apo extender works without modification, I will stay R only - for now :-)
wildlightphoto Posted February 17, 2008 Share #6 Posted February 17, 2008 If you want to use the 2x APO on the SL2 the modification is very simple. I've done it myself.

wildlightphoto Posted February 23, 2008 Share #9 Posted February 23, 2008 Will the 1.4x fit on a SL2. After slight modification (flange swap) a non-ROM 1.4x Extender fits the SL2, as well as the SL and Leicaflex Standard. When on the Leicaflexes the auto-diaphragm works but metering is stop-down (SL and SL2 only), not at full aperture.
