Can anyone please tell me how to remove the protection ring so that I can attach a lens hood? It is screwed down too tightly for me to budge it and I am wary of damaging a precision instrument.

Ten minutes later...Panic over thanks to a tip from Leica at Milton Keynes - put a rubber band around the ring, that way you can get a good grip on the thing.

Isn't the rubber ring meant to stay in place?

If you get caught without a rubber band you can use your leather belt. Just wrap it once around the filter and pinch the belt tightly together where the leather comes together and twist your entire hand around the lens barrell and they come right off. I've done it many times with my tv camera lens filters when shooting at night and want to avoid the internal reflections.

If you use the rubber band trick, grab it with three didgits and not just the thumb and forefinger as they will make the filter egg shapped and actually cause it to bind. A three finger hold works best here.
