ericperlberg Posted February 13, 2008 Share #1 Posted February 13, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) Apologies if this has been remarked on already, I couldn't find anything in a search. I was out for a walk along Old Street/City Road in London and saw the sign for Red Dot Camera with Leica stuff visible and sitting at the desk was one of the chaps who used to work at The Classic Camera. Is it an extension of The Classic Camera or have past staff gone their separate ways? Anyone know anything more?
Advertisement Posted February 13, 2008 Posted February 13, 2008 Hi ericperlberg, Take a look here Red Dot Camera on Old Street. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
chris_tribble Posted February 13, 2008 Share #2 Posted February 13, 2008 Probably fallen out. Was it Ivor (big guy with curly hair - haven't seen him for some time...) I'll have to check it out (but I'm in Tokyo at the moment..)

I'll have to check it out (but I'm in Tokyo at the moment..) Funny - I was wondering the same thing. I've been in TCC several times over the last months and never seen him. Couple of new faces there too so they obviously still needed the staff.

I have not noticed anything and I only live 2 mins walk away from those roads. There was a thread a short while ago that indicated a new dealer was due in this area. I'm off for a serious walk round tomorrow!
gravastar Posted February 13, 2008 Share #5 Posted February 13, 2008 As far as I know Ivor has started his own business. I was told about this a few weeks ago but was unable to find the shop so please tell me it's location. At the same time I was also told that Classic Camera no longer have a contract with Leica - although I have no proof of this. They are still selling Leica equipment and now have Nikon and Voightlander stock whereas before they were exclusively Leica. Bob.
fishblimp Posted February 13, 2008 Share #6 Posted February 13, 2008 Thank you for bringing this store up on here. I was staying down the road at a hotel and noticed the (closed at the time) store on a Sunday, my last day there. I wish I'd have gotten a chance to pop inside. I really love the name
ericperlberg Posted February 13, 2008 Author Share #7 Posted February 13, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) Yes it was Ivor, I didn't know his name, but the large fellow with curly hair formerly of the Classic Camera is him. (I bet he has some stories to tell). And I wish I could say exactly where I was at the time, I was meandering up and down the side streets and not really paying attention. I guess I was about 10 minutes walking from Old Street Tube station towards C. London. Facing Central London the shop was on the left side of the road. Their URL (reddotcamera.co.uk) was plastered on the window but at the moment its only a holding page on GoDaddy's servers.

ericperlberg Posted February 13, 2008 Author Share #10 Posted February 13, 2008 Do you Brits not have web searches? Before I posted I found nothing on google. Had you found something Bill? Ironically, now searching for Red Dot Camera brings up my post above. And if you search for reddotcamera you get a googlewack! Except now you don't because my second post is now up there too... chris_tribble Posted February 13, 2008 Share #18 Posted February 13, 2008 Very strange - we now only have two leica premier dealers in central London - RG Lewis and Richard Caplan. Having bought from TCC for years I find this strange. Grumpy at times, problematic at others (Ivor's was the only smiling face usually) but they always had the stock and I bought both my M8s there + excellent used lenses (50 lux pre-asph, 75 lux and an excellent 21 pre-asph included). I wonder what happened?

I wonder what happened? I wonder too. I've never seen the shop empty, and I've always quite enjoyed going there. I'm aware they have a bad reputation for service, but I didn't experience it myself. In fact I bought all my gear from them - 4 bodies, 5 lenses. And the fact that they've always had everything in stock so I've never needed to order anything has been a major plus. And, with a bit of prompting, they've generally agreed a sensible price for most of it. I suppose it's quite possible they've abandoned Leica UK, rather than the other way round. Perhaps they prefer to be free of dealer restrictions and operate from a broader base, with greater control over their retail margins. But who knows.... Perhaps they prefer to be free of dealer restrictions and operate from a broader base, with greater control over their retail margins. But who knows.... I've also dealt with them for many years starting with Leicaflexes and progressing through Ms and Rs, including lenses for all. So I was suprised to see that they're no longer on Leica's dealer list. I know that in the past they've had terrible problems with supply from Leica and sometimes they'd refuse to take an order because they didn't know when they would obtain stock. I waited over 9 months for a WATE and then it couldn't be supplied as a kit with finder. One thing that really peeved me was/is their policy of non returnable deposits when after many months of waiting you could find other dealers with stock. My recent visits have always been greeted by friendly and enthusiastic staff. Bob.
