stunsworth Posted February 10, 2008 Share #2 Posted February 10, 2008 Andy, never used it myself - I was also largely a Tri-X user - by that looks excellent.
Guest wls.shanghai Posted February 10, 2008 Share #3 Posted February 10, 2008 hello andym911 no worry, the NEOPAN 400 Professional ist a absolut superb film!!!! I get very good results with D76 Agitate continuously for the first minute and for five seconds every minute thereafter. Processing Time 7:30 min. Temp. 20 ° C (Smal Tank) good luck wlsSHANGHAI cc/ ....maybe if possible, you also try the ACROS 100 !!!!!
roguewave Posted February 10, 2008 Share #4 Posted February 10, 2008 Andy, great image and adorable subject. Tones look warm & creamy with good range.
andym911 Posted February 10, 2008 Author Share #5 Posted February 10, 2008 thanks for the comments.. Must say that I am impressed with how well it scans, fine grain, sharp and great contrast in the mid tones...this scan is almost straight out of the scanner, just a bit of contrast and USM...am looking forward to trying it in low light to see how it is then. andy
cocker Posted February 10, 2008 Share #6 Posted February 10, 2008 Andy - strangely enough I've just ordered ten rolls each of Neopan 400 in 35 and 120 so I was interested to see your picture. I must say it looks excellent technically and its a great picture. I will try your suggestion of HC-110 when the film arrives. Best wishes
andym911 Posted February 10, 2008 Author Share #7 Posted February 10, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) Keith thanks for looking and comment..... FWIW the Dev time was 5:30 Dilution B, agitated for first 30 sec and then 5 sec every minute at 20deg. I was getting a bit frustrated with my B&W from the M8 (still haven't got my PP sorted how I want it)..so back to film and am happy again:D Will still persevere however with the M8,in parallel. Cheers andy
Mark Antony Posted February 10, 2008 Share #8 Posted February 10, 2008 Neopan 400 is a wonderful film, and it does something that Tri-x struggles at, holding onto highlights without losing shadow detail at box speed. Tri-x has to be down-rated to EI 160-250 depending on developer and dilution. I think Fuji Neopan is a much underrated film and is the staple diet for my both my M4-P and Rollei 35 and I'm starting to love it in my Fuji 6x7 RF. Mark PS nice shot Andy

Maciel Posted February 11, 2008 Share #11 Posted February 11, 2008 Neopan400 is great. Plus in the US it is the cheapest B&W 400 film (2.99). Like it a lot in Rodinal 1:100, 20C, 60 minutes, stand.
fotohuis Posted February 11, 2008 Share #12 Posted February 11, 2008 I am using Neopan 400/1600 already for a long time. One of my favorite B&W films together with the Acros 100. Great pic!
telewatt Posted February 11, 2008 Share #13 Posted February 11, 2008 Jan thanks..looks like I have some catching up to do.... make a test with EMOFIN... ...the best developer for this film... you can read it in a (good) big test in a magazine..I did this test 10 years befor and it was my favorit.. ..the problems are always the highlight and the shadows..... gtownby Posted February 13, 2008 Share #15 Posted February 13, 2008 Andy - Thanks for sharing. What scanner are you using? All - Is Neopan positioned as the market equivalent of Tri-X? That is, is it intended to show grain? (As opposed to T-Max, which tries to eliminate grain). BTW, I'm an M8 shooter with a new MP -- I'm loving the look of my B&Ws on film! rob_x2004 Posted February 13, 2008 Share #16 Posted February 13, 2008 Is Neopan positioned as the market equivalent of Tri-X? I wouldnt have thought so. I dont really know why you would use Trix. Maybe it was good in the newspapers or something, when you only had black and white, and no tones at all.
Gerald Lowle Posted February 14, 2008 Share #17 Posted February 14, 2008 I have recently started using Neopan 400 myself, but alas, my days of D&P finished a decade ago. I rely on outside processing and printing nowadays. My latest batch is nothing like this picture, which has fantastic tonal range and sharpness, apart of course from being a very nice picture! Any recommendations where to go for decent D&P?
andym911 Posted February 15, 2008 Author Share #18 Posted February 15, 2008 Gerald, thanks for your comments on the picture. Normally I do shoot TriX but as noted earlier I ran out and could only get my hands on Neopan. I am impressed at how it handles.I shot it at 320 and processed normally with HC 110. Regarding the scanner I use a lowly Epson 4990 Photo flatbed.I get better results with this scanner than I ever did with the Minolta 5400. My impressions of it are that for the money it is an amazing scanner. I use the standard software that came with it as I never saw any improvement using 3rd party software such as Vuescan.I know however that I am in the minority here. I scan with default settings for B&W neg, at 2400 dpi and save as a TIFF. Then import into lightroom for any tonal corrections/contrast etc. THe image you see above was taken with a 35mm V4 Summicron on an M6. Don't hesitate toa sk if there is any other info I can give.
