scrolling wheel not working before upgrade

Since there was other thread on this by Mark (after upgrade). I have been having this problem for few weeks now, without the new firmware.

It is just like how Mark explained. Wheel moves couple of rows then stops or go back up (loop with two rows). If kept trying, will go down and skip some rows.

I am starting to worry that it might be the wheel itself. Arrow keys work just fine like Mark said.

I have not used the camera for last few weeks much, thus it is not as bothering, but every time I pickup, it shows the symptom.

Maybe, the upgrade tonight will solve the problem for me (opposite of Mark's experience)?

I did reinstall the new update waiting the 3 seconds before hitting 'yes' (actually waited about 10 seconds for good luck) and I still have the problem. Seems better if I'm scrolling very slowly and patiently, notching things one at a time, but if I try to move at a faster pace, both in the 'menu' mode and in the 'set' mode, the scroll wheel gets stuck on a bar eventually and moving up or down does not seem to free it. I will be curious to upgrade my backup m8 tonight and see what happens.

The other thread on this appears closed for some reason.

Yep, what you are seeing is what I am seeing with mine, yet to be upgraded.

I also notice it when reviewing pictures. When I think I am zooming in, I find myself in index page (multiple pix).

Other people don't seem to have this issue from look of it so far. So, it is starting to worry me a little.

Yes, I noticed other thread was closed that is why I created this one since I wanted to bring the topic anyway.

Well, just upgraded the firmware and wanted update on wheel problem. Problem remains active. I think wheel is not really working properly anymore.

(most operations on main menu)

1) May move as excepted (best result)

2) May move one row down, the get stuck.

3) After one move down, next click may move back to previous item

4) May skip one line or more

Most bothersome is when I need to change ISO, which is often enough in low light situation, only sure UI is arrow keys, not the wheel. More and more I am conviced that it is hardware issue.

For those having the same problem: my inability to use the scroll wheel continues even after a 24hr battery out / reload software with fresh battery etc. When I kept the battery out for a day (more like a day and a half) and reloaded the latest firmware, I noticed that the clock settings and preferences were still the same as before which leads me to believe that 24-30 hours is NOT enough time to clear the internal setting. So, I am now trying to keep the battery out and camera on for two days and then try to reload again. I may try to go back to an earlier firmware and then upgrade to this latest in two steps. Read in another thread that the previous firmware version may have legacy code necessary for the new firmware to properly take hold. Not an expert there. Hope this third try will be the fix or it's off to Solms, I suppose, for repair.

Did have my camera shut down on me though two days ago and the menu for the WATE came up while I was shooting and would not go away, even though the lens I had on was not a WATE or coded! Very scary, glad to have a back-up M8 with me. Anyone else seeing this strangeness. I read the installation instructions 10 times and was sure that everything was done properly...

In my particular case, the erratic behavior of the scroll feature that is evoked by simply using the wheel is nothing new. I was hoping it got resolved in the 2.1 FW update although it wasn’t. It actually doesn’t occur too often although it is annoying. Performing a basic “Reset” appears to settle the issue until the next time. It’s sorta like “repairing permissions” via the Mac’s utiliy feature. BTW: The problem isn’t isolated to earlier or heavily used units, since mine is only 2-months old and my serial number starts with 333xxxx.

Daniel, that's disappointing to hear assuming that you've found no other problems with the recent firmware upgrade. The problems are happening on my 'newer' M8 serial 310xxxx and the 'old' more heavily used to date, m8, is fine. I'll try a "reset" again if this next round doesn't work, although, hitting the reset button after the first try at an upgrade is, I think, what started to cause the weirdness.

There's a scroll wheel on the M8?

Just kidding.

I'm a button man so I very rarely notice any problem with the scroll wheel. The few times I do it is when I'm reviewing a image and I want to Zoom In on it. I use to get a Zoom Out with the first turn on the wheel in the Zoom In direction. I haven't noticed it with the 1.2.1 firmware but thatn I haven't been taking a lot of pictures lately.

I initially notice it when the camera is first turned on and I take a shot and then review and Zoom In. On the first Zoom In I get the Zoom out but then after the camera warms up, My Thinking, it doesn't happen again.

Tanka, your problem sounds mechanical, i. e., physical rather than electronic. Before sending off for repair, you might want to give it a few judicious shots of Dust-Off or compressed air behind, or at, the wheel mechanism. There might be a bit of grit or something under there that is fouling things up.

I have had this sort of problem with the scroll wheel from the start (one year ago). To me it is a real weak link on the camera.

My wheel is fairly stiff and with the poorly defined milling round the edge quite hard to move without exerting such force as to make it quite easy to overshoot indents. I don't really have many menu scrolling problems, but, yes, when zooming in or out in playback it might well go too many steps.

I have always felt that this was poor mechanical design rather than a software (firmware) problem. It actually annoys me quite a bit - this is not new technology - the wheel on my Canon moves freely and cleanly - it becomes an instinctive and transparent part of navigating the camera's controls. But not on the M8.

I put up with it, of course, what else can I do, but if there was one thing more to include in the "upgrade" it would be this wretched wheel. How hard can it be? Like the stiff and notchy shutter release it seems that not enough thought was given to useability in its design. If Leica thought that if they made it too freely revolving it might do so accidentally, then just put a lock on it, like Canon do. I little button to switch off the wheel's function would take up hardly any room.

I haven't yet upgraded to the latest firmware yet, but I have no expectation that it will improve the functionality of the scroll wheel; I just think that it is a mechanical problem and we'll have to live with it.

I'm quite surprised that so few people have mentioned this - perhaps it is not the same on all cameras. Or perhaps I just have odd fingers.

I agree, the one on my older m8 is stiff too, BUT, it does work! My newer one has a very smooth wheel, that unfortunately skips around like mad now. I will point out, that before this upgrade, it was pretty seemless to use and worked as it should without to much effort. At least I can't ever remember skipping or it getting stuck while cycling through choices. My guess is the problem is software related somehow. It doesn't seem as though many users have experienced the same problem...

Guy - if you're out there with the Leica folks but them a drink on me and maybe get an answer :)

Mark, have you sought advice from Leica?
