atwood1202 Posted January 31, 2008 Share #1 Posted January 31, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) so my m7 has been broken almost since the day i got it. i purchased it over ebay after it had had a complete check up/clean at leica... anyway i got through about 7 rolls and the shutter stuck i took it to my local camera store and gave it to the leica pro there it was supposed to be fixed for my birthday instead it was there for about 2 months where they took it apart three times and put it back together... these guys were very kind and helpful if you are in texas definitely talk to the owner of precision camera about any leica problems you may have. anyway they figured out that there was a magnet broken in a shutter and now it has to go to leica where i will hear about it in about 2 weeks.. i took it on a trip which is where it broke and i had to go through countless metal detectors and security machines... i was wondering if any of you think tis may have affected the magnet in some way. just a thought i also just met robb kendrick who just had a piece in national geographic entitled 21st century cowboys.. great great work he shoots tin types and has a great style and eye. anyway, he had a large amount of tri x 320 for medium format that he was getting rid of at about $1 or so a roll ($400 of film all together) needless to say i bought it and a going to try and stay busy with my hasselblad for now ...but i will miss my m7 mark:(
Advertisement Posted January 31, 2008 Posted January 31, 2008 Hi atwood1202, Take a look here m7 problems. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
redfalo Posted January 31, 2008 Share #2 Posted January 31, 2008 Mark, I´m very sorry to hear this. Have you tried to contact the seller? At least in Germany Leica has extended the warranty for the M7 to five years (which shows how much trust they have in this camera...), but only for the first user. Maybe you could have sent it to Leica in his name, so they would have fixed it under warranty if it´s still valid. (Depends on when the camera was sold, of course). I doubt that the metal detectors and security things played any role in damaging your camera. I took my M7 through dozens and dozens of security checks at airports and never had any problem (nor with the films, BTW). Good luck, and have fun with your M7 when it returned. It really is a great camera. yours oalf

redfalo Posted January 31, 2008 Share #4 Posted January 31, 2008 great to hear that you don´t have to pay for the repair, at least. You´re right, rangefinder is a GREAT system. It took me 6 month to get used to it since then I see it exactly like you. Do you know if your M7 already has the new optical DX reader? the first generation of DX reader (a mechanical one where it was quite difficult to remove the film canister) does not work very reliable, you shouldn´t use it. There are reports in the German speaking forum that Leica meanwhile replaces the old one under warranty. If you have the old one and the camera is in Solms anyway that would be a good opportunity to have this (free! ) "upgrade". I don´t use the DX reader but will send my M7 to Solms sometimes... Yours Olaf I also have an M7 with the older VF and mechanical DX reader. It is now in Solms for both upgrades - under warranty. Harry
