robsteve Posted January 28, 2008 Share #1 Posted January 28, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) Now that we have all had a chance to try firmware v1.3, are there any thoughts about what has improved in it and any reasons to use the earlier firmwares? I was thinking there still may be situations where the earlier firmwares might be better at lower ISO. Leica Camera AG - Downloads Robert

wparsonsgisnet Posted January 28, 2008 Share #2 Posted January 28, 2008 Now that we have all had a chance to try firmware v1.3... Robert, is this another gag? I don't see anything beyond 1.11 on the Leica download list. Regards,
andybarton Posted January 28, 2008 Share #3 Posted January 28, 2008 Whatever the pros vs cons, I am willing to bet that there won't be a v 1.4! I am more than satisfied with v1.3.

Jamie Roberts Posted January 28, 2008 Share #9 Posted January 28, 2008 Actually, I've been really happy with the 1.3 revision; it seems better to me at high ISOs, and I'm not seeing any degradation at low ISOs... Do you have something particular in mind Robert?
robsteve Posted January 28, 2008 Author Share #10 Posted January 28, 2008 Actually, I've been really happy with the 1.3 revision; it seems better to me at high ISOs, and I'm not seeing any degradation at low ISOs... Do you have something particular in mind Robert? I just noticed that there seems to be more smudging, noise reduction in some 400iso shots I took yesterday. You really only notice it at 100% and I am not really sure if 1.1 had this. I noticed this the first time I shot version 1.3 when it was introduced a few months ago. It was during a hockey game and I used 1600iso. I commented that the noise reduction seemed to work on even coloured/textured areas, but not as much on areas with details. With these 400iso shots, I think the black pants, the player in red hat and the other players jersey seems to have a heavy handed noise reduction applied for a 400iso shot. In this type of light I would expect to get some more detail in these dark fabrics. Here is the full shot: I am looking at the black pants here. If you look at the laces and skate, the focus was correct and there should be some more detail in the black pants. If you look at the hat, it is also missing detail, but you can clearly see the players razor stubble. Even his red jersey seems to be missing the detail in the fabric. In the past, though I was probably shooting at 200iso, this type of shot with this type of lighting, would have had the fabric so sharp there was moire. andybarton Posted January 28, 2008 Share #11 Posted January 28, 2008 Are these from a RAW file, Steve?
robsteve Posted January 28, 2008 Author Share #12 Posted January 28, 2008 Are these from a RAW file, Steve? Yes, from the DNG. I just opened the same file in Flexcolor and it was a bit better, but Flexcolor has always been better than Adobe/Lightroom.
andybarton Posted January 28, 2008 Share #13 Posted January 28, 2008 I wasn't aware that there was any NR applied to a RAW file
robsteve Posted January 28, 2008 Author Share #14 Posted January 28, 2008 I wasn't aware that there was any NR applied to a RAW file Lots of Mojo gets applied to RAW files before the RAW is written. Tape over the ROM contacts on one of your wide lenses and take a picture, then take the tape off an take the same picture. You will see colour and vignette corrections are applied when the lens has ROM. If you go to the Hasselblad site and read about the features of their digital cameras, you will see that a lot of these features originated with the DMR. robsteve Posted January 28, 2008 Author Share #15 Posted January 28, 2008 Here is the same file through Flexcolor. It is a bit better, but the black still seems to have some noise reduction applied to it. This is the full frame. A crop into the well lit black area. Here is the Lightroom processed crop. glenerrolrd Posted January 28, 2008 Share #16 Posted January 28, 2008 Rob I don t know about 1.1 but I shot yesterday a KiteBoarding Event....boarders had Black Wet Suits looked just like yours at 400. In many cases I had to look for the focus plane to be sure I had a sharp image or maybe I missed the optimum focus point. 400 isn t working for me.....100 of course is amazing but shooting sports is difficult. robsteve Posted January 28, 2008 Author Share #17 Posted January 28, 2008 Andy, same question to you. Where are you guys getting the update? Bill: It was at the link I posted in the original message. I didn't realize the whole URL didn't show in the link, but if you clicked on it, it brought up the DMR download page. As for the M8 firmware, you might want to ask Guy Mancuso about it on his web site. Robert

psquared Posted January 29, 2008 Share #19 Posted January 29, 2008 Rob, I think your observations are correct. Subtle, but I think they're real. http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/digital-forum/44495-dmr-firmware-iso-noise-comparison.html#post466751 Peter
