As it looks like the new M8 will support SD I am in need for a external card reader (and preferably writer too).

Working with both OS 9.2.2. and OS X 10.4.7 I found the Sandisk Imagemate 12-in-1 reader/writer.

Does anybody has experience with this one ?

TIA Michiel

I have two as I wanted the other card options. One on my 12" Powerbook and the other I share between my G5's. Just plug in and away it goes. The one with my Powerbook has been soaked, frozen and generally badly treated in the field and after leaving in a warm place overnight it is ready to go. They have never failed me.

I personally have a SanDisk just like the one you mention and it works fine on my MacBook. As a matter of fact, we've never found a card reader that has failed to work on any of our Apple computers, from G3s to Mac Pros. Albeit on OS X, of course. On OS 9, that'd be another story. You'd probably need drivers for them. Specially if the reader is USB 2.0 compatible. Good luck getting those drivers for OS 9.

Needless to say, the time to say 'bye-bye' to Mac OS 9 passed almost three years ago. It is no longer supported on Intel Macs. And will no longer be supported even on PPC Macs come OS X "Leopard" (10.5) in early 2007.

Time to move on, mate!

Michiel,

The M8 will indeed use Secure Digital Memory Cards. Additionally, it will also most likely utilize the new SDHC Secure Digital 2.0 specification standard as well.

If you have any intention of using one of the new SDHC cards you will need a SDHC compliant card reader/writer.

So far I am only aware of such product coming from Panasonic, Maxell, and SanDisk. The SanDisk product is the MicroMate USB 2.0 SD/SDHC compatible card reader, which will retail for $19.99. Note the inclusion of “SDHC” as this reader in not one-in-the-same as the MicroMate USB 2.0 SD Reader. As a bonus, it comes bundle standard with the new SanDisk SDSDBR-4096 Standard SDHC 4GB Memory Card.

The Panasonic card reader is the model BN-SDCJP3 USB 2.0 SDHC Reader/Writer.

Regista, thanks for your info but one of the advantages of the Sandisk's is that it comes bundled with a CD with OS 9 drivers.

BTW I agree with you about the preferred choice of OS X, but I have still one app working on OS 9.

cheers, Michiel

True, but it is highly unlikely the M8 will support SDHC, as it's a separate and backwardly incompatible format to the standard SD.

See this link:

SanDisk 4GB Secure Digital SDHC | Digital Camera Review

AFAIK there is only one card currently available in SDHC - the Sandisk 4GB. So if Leica were to tie their horse to SDHC, it would mean that (currently) only one card by one manufacturer would work with the M8.

Not Very Wise...

?!

Andrew,

You have your fa[q]s wrong.

First, while SDHC memory cards are not backwards compatible with legacy SD format host devices, SDHC host devices, by nature of the SDA 2.00 specification, are backwards compatible with legacy Secure Digital memory cards.

Second, there are numerous SDHC memory cards, scheduled to be out on the market before the M8, including the SanDisk Standard SDHC 4GB Memory Card, SDSDBR-4096-A10, which itself is not yet readily available. This includes:

• Pretec 4GB SDHC Memory Card

Additionally, many new digital cameras being introduced, that supports Secure Digital memory cards, are SDHC compliant including the following:

• Casio Exilim EX-Z770

• Casio Exilim EX-Z700

• Nikon D80

• Panasonic Lumix DMC-L1

• Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX3

• Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX50

• Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX07

• Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ50

• Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX2

It would be wise, if the Leica M8 is to be SDHC compliant, to look at a obtaining a memory card reader which is also SDHC compliant, as both will also support legacy Secure Digital memory cards.

My money (2¢) is on there being no SDHC support, if only because it will muck up compatibility with the plain SD cards used in the Digilux 2 and DMR :?)

possibly, but the camera's you mention were developed a long time ago......well in the digital era I mean ;-)
