bill Posted August 31, 2006 Share #1 Posted August 31, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) ...from Leica at MK The letter confirmed that that the M8 will have a 1.33 mag factor and be 10mp. The actual purpose of the letter was to confirm my mailing details and M-ownership (basic questions about whether I owned wide, standard or tele lenses). The sweetener for sending back my response was a £10 discount off getting my lenses encoded. Regards, Bill

marknorton Posted August 31, 2006 Share #3 Posted August 31, 2006 I was told by my dealer that Leica are screening the names and addresses of people who have paid deposits to avoid "any funny business" which I took to mean buying multiples and selling them on ebay. Or something.
andybarton Posted August 31, 2006 Share #4 Posted August 31, 2006 I had the same letter about a week ago - I must get the response back to them. Ten quid off something else would be useful, though

adan Posted August 31, 2006 Share #9 Posted August 31, 2006 This may vary from country to country. I've received no letter in the US - but have heard (RUMOR ALERT!) from someone in my Leica supply chain that US M8s may include coupons for TWO FREE lens conversions (!!) Like-a I said, rumor - could end up being discounts for 2 lenses - or completely in error.
marknorton Posted August 31, 2006 Share #10 Posted August 31, 2006 Egg on the face then for those of us who have already paid for 9 lens conversions...
adan Posted August 31, 2006 Share #11 Posted August 31, 2006 Quick, Mark - run out and buy TWO MORE unconverted lenses before they vanish!! Like I said - promotional things like this may vary from one country's distribution arm to the next country's. Leica US may feel the market here demands 2 freebies - Leica UK may feel 10 sterling is adequate (is that total or per lens? - I guess someone with 10 lenses could do OK out of the UK deal). And its still a rumor (only one source so far). Not sure which two of my lenses I'd pick if I get the option: probably the 21 and 28 would benefit most from optical corrections. I'd like the EXIF data from either the 50 or 75 - but then again my old 90 TE has a roughish mount and would benefit from a new one - if they're going cheap! My 15 C/V and 135 are out of the running anyway.
Bob Ross Posted September 1, 2006 Share #12 Posted September 1, 2006 Andy, The one that I've seen reads, "If you purchase a new Leica USA lens with 6-bit coding, Leica will code two other lenses for you for free." Bob
marknorton Posted September 1, 2006 Share #13 Posted September 1, 2006 Equivalent to a $250 rebate, so not bad, but does suppose you already have 2 lenses to code... Better than a measly £10 from Leica UK...
pekem Posted September 1, 2006 Share #14 Posted September 1, 2006 Equivalent to a $250 rebate, so not bad, but does suppose you already have 2 lenses to code... Better than a measly £10 from Leica UK... I suspect that this letter is no more than a marketing exercise. Leica UK want to establish an up to date mailing list and at the same time discover how big an exercise the conversion of existing M lenses will be. All very wise in my view. The ten pound offer was simply to encourage a response to obtain vital information. Imagine the uproar if Digital M users were told that there would be a six month or longer delay in converting lenses to optimise the potential of a Digital M. This step will enable them to ensure that they are not caught out and at the same time provide a really valuable mailing list. Well worth the ten pounds off the cost of converting one lens, the cost of which in the UK is unknown.
gravastar Posted September 1, 2006 Share #15 Posted September 1, 2006 The letter also asks the type of lenses you own. Wide, standard or tele. That information will give them an idea if they are going to sell bodies only or potentially more lenses. I'm suprised they didn't ask which focal lengths so as to obtain an indication of new wide angle sales or needs. There was a hint in the letter this was an ongoing exercise and there would be further communications from them. Bob.
