C-LUX 1 black and white tip

This forum has got me interested in black and white photography. Lately I've been using my FX01, a C-LUX 1 clone, in black and white mode. When I compare the images from my camera with black and white work from other photographers that I like, I find my images don't have a lot of contrast. They are a little bland in that regard.

The tip is a simple one: Assign the Adobe RGB color profile to your black and white images from this camera (do not use the convert profile or match profile functions). Your images will have more of a gritty, contrasty look. The difference between sRGB and Adobe RGB is not huge, but it is noticeable.

Advantages: This can be done quickly and with no loss in picture quality. It is easily reversible if done with care. If done right there is no need for an additional master image file.

Disadvantages: Images posted to the web with Adobe RGB profile will only look just right in Safari on the Mac. You need to be careful when printing.

For further study: Using Photoshop it is possible to create a modified color profile from Adobe RGB with a higher gamma, giving still more contrast. I'm just beginning to experiment but gamma 2.3 is my favorite so far. Note that for color work on this camera I use a smaller color profile with a gamma of 2.0. If there is interest I can post the custom profiles and/or directions for making them with Photoshop.
