The use of the protective mask allows you to maintain the aspect ratio of important features in the image. In the horizontally compressed picture of the late evening seascape the surfer has been masked so that their height and width hasn't changed. Similarly in the stretched picture of the depression in the cliff top the script/text at the bottom right has been protected so it's aspect ratio remains correct. Very interesting software Bob.
